A dramatic and occationally humorous short story about the life of an experienced captain with sailors who are less than experienced.
As I set sail, embarking on another journey, I can’t help but think about my last disaster of a trip. I suffered from a terrible seasickness, scurvy to be exact. It’s hard enough navigating Poseidon’s seas at full strength, let alone while also trying to hold down your breakfast. My sailors expect more than this, I feel they deserve it because they selected me as the helmsman of this ship. We also had to go through one of the worst capsizing incidents of my illustrious sailing career. The starboard and bow were unevenly weighted, which put us at a disadvantage to start with. With the inexperienced men I was cursed with, I might as well been floating in a dinghy through a tsunami. As our ship began to rock back and forth from the striking tides, I beckoned to the heavens to give me one more chance at life on this earth. Clearly the gods have something else planned for me, as I am still here, alive and well. But I wonder if this next venture will be any different. Maybe that was a sign from Poseidon himself to avoid sailing for the rest of my life. However, sailing is all I have ever known, and could never give it up. That is not an option, so I will continue sailing even if instead of battling pirates and discovering new lands, I am simply delivering goods to lands across the sea. Crew member asks “Captain, what’s an anchor again?” Well, looks like I’m in trouble again.
