A romantic short story about a lonely girl meeting her secret admirer.
A SECRET ADMIRER
There is nothing special about Valentine’s Day. It’s just one of those days when a guy happens to enjoy showing off his feelings toward his girl by giving her gifts and cards with awful poems he pretends to write like a pro.
Stop kidding yourself! The tiny voice at the back of my head snaps.
I walk past a shop window and try very hard to blackout the displays that are catching my eyes. To be honest, I’m not very good with self-control, especially when it comes to something that is related to romance. So there I am, gazing at the red and pink balloons everywhere and the picture of a cute couple kissing.
I sigh. How I wish I am that girl. But who am I kidding? Who’d go out with a mousy girl like me? A girl that doesn’t even know anything about fashion or flirting or dating for that matter?
But hay, I do love myself. Otherwise I wouldn’t feel so content and happy with my life right now. Although sometimes I do feel that nagging feeling that I am missing something important. And today, at this very instant , is one of those times.
“What to do tonight,” I whisper under my breath, looking at two people walking towards me. My heart suddenly does that kick again—the sudden kick of excitement. I feel so happy for them. How odd is that? And they look so in love. I notice that, as they are walking, they are so close their bodies look almost like simese-twins.
The woman looks at me. I grin politely at her as strangers do when they pass on the street. I shift my gaze to her hand. She is holding a card with a picture of two Teddy bears kissing and on her finger is a diamond ring. The shinny shone winks at me. My heart kicks in my chest again in excitement, and my grin turns into a broad smile. The woman sees my twinkling eyes and full smile. She nods at me.
“Congratulation,” I say to her.
She laughs and says, “Thanks.” Then they past me.
I glance over and see the little green man flashing. I rush with the rest of the crowd to the next block. Upon arriving, I catch my undisciplined self staring at another shop window. Inside are displays that are very similar to the other one. There are pink and red heart-shaped balloons and cute Teddy bears hugging and kissing. My heart quivers with excitement as I gaze at the kissing Teddy bears.
