A short story about two illegal immigrants who try to cross the Border.

I wake up and wonder: why am I feeling so excited? The answer comes with the doorbell. I rush to the door and see the sight I always see on my way down. My cracked mirror, unpainted walls, and my broken wardrobe. The doorbell rings again and I open the door. It’s Eduardo.

“Hi! Are you ready?” he asks.

“Er… for what?” I reply hesitantly.

“For the immigration of course!” he says.

“Oh yeah…” I half wish that we don’t have to migrate but my outcome is twice my income so I have to go to America for a Job. I quickly go to the living room to get my few things I need to live in America; my bottle of water, my life savings of two-hundred dollars and my photo of my family. I miss them so much. You see, when I was a child my life began to fall apart, my mother Helena died of the plague and my dad committed suicide because of all the shock and pressure of raising the family on his own. My little brother left me long ago went out looking for a decent living in North America. That’s just what I and Eduardo are going to do now.

“Hurry up Davido; it’s almost two O’clock in the morning. We’re running behind schedule!”

“Coming!” I say and go back to the door.

***

We’re at the border. Everything is eerily silent and dark. I know that we’re going to do it. I go first. I climb under a small gap underneath the border. I am now officially a North American! Eduardo comes too and I see triumph in his eyes too. But suddenly a beam of light gets shot at us and we hear the sound of gunfire! Eduardo runs around and circles screaming and shouting but I keep my cool. I duck down and hide under the long grass growing here. I quickly crawl over to a big rock. Only to find the poisonous snake there. The last thing I see is the moonlight glinting off his sharp fangs…
