A story I wrote about a person who i’ve been studying who was on the titanic, I wrote what it would be like settling in America. By the way, i’m pretending the Titanic didn’t sink.
Frank and his family have just departed from the Titanic. After cruising the town a little, they selected a hotel and went in. They have rented a small but comfortable room, at a reasonable price.
Now Frank had to find work. He took a taxi to the job department, payed with cash and entered. Now he found himself in a large lobby, so he headed towards the desk and enquired for a job. The lady directs him to the seventh floor, room A9. In little time, Frank was face to face with a 40 year old man behind a large, organised desk. He gives him a list of places which might need work.
The nearest toolmaker shop is called “John & Adam’s tools”, which sounded much like a family business. He took a taxi to the roadside shop, and entered. There’s no “looking for workers sign”. Not good. I walk in and ask for a job, and get answered with a simple “no”.
Frank heads towards the next place, via taxi, which is about 15 minutes away. He finds himself facing an industrial-like building hidden behind a fence. Again, there is no “looking for workers” sign. I enter and get asked by a worker “How can I help you?”. I ask whether there is any job spots. They tell me maybe within a few months. I decline; the family would be broke with no work until then.
I now consider starting my own business, so I walk to the nearest real estate shop. The prices are much too high, I can tell by looking at a few houses. The other tool making businesses are ages away, so he walks sadly down the street.
I think my eyes are deceiving me. It can’t be right, it wasn’t on the list of the toolmaking places. A new looking shop simply named “Tool supplies” with signs posted all over it asking for work comes into my view.
He applies, and gets accepted. At the rate Frank I getting paid, he can stay in his apartment or possibly upgrade, pay the bill and food and have a little left over. He works ten hours a day, eight to six, every day.
