A short tale for younger children, written by Jan Deelstra.

Once upon a time in the far off land of Chirwir lived a brother and a sister mouse. They were very nice mice, and they were well liked by all the townsfolk. Even the previously sneaky and teasingly conniving fat cat named Soya, enjoyed these two sibling mice.

These two mice, Micoka, a handsome young fellow with shiny sleek hair, and his sweet natured sister, Mikola, were very unique and special mice. You see, although they were siblings, one boy and one girl, and they were exactly like other grey Chirwirian mice in every other way, these two mice shared a special trait. These two mice shared just one tail. Can you imagine how fun that would be, to share a tail, one very long tail, between the brother and the sister? If the brother went south and the sister went north they would end up not going anywhere at all! They would giggle their little high-pitched mouse giggles and would roll around and end up in the exact place they had started out from! Isn’t that the silliest of all the mice antics you can imagine? Two giggling mice, all rolled up into a little ball of sleek grey hair and chubby, roly poly pot bellies were connected by that single very long tail!

Soya kept a close eye on the unique brother and sister. She had followed these two unique mice to Chirwir because they were so special. She had watched them at the market. The two mice with one tail were not at all afraid of fat-cat Soya. That was unique enough to make Soya follow these mice with one tail. Until Soya met these two sibling mice sharing one tail, she had never met anyone who was not afraid of her. Soya did not want others to fear her. She wanted to be friends. Since arriving in Chirwir, Soya spent long hours watching these two mice with one tail. It makes her happy to see them enjoying life each and every day.

These unique mice tried to play like other mice. Micoka would try to twirl the tail between them, and have little Mikola jump that tail as they had seen the neighbors jumping rope. Little Micoka would try so hard to make that tail go up over Mikola’s head, then under her tiny feet as she jumped, but it was all too connected! Micoka would end up with his tail end in the air and his sister Mikola would be all tangled up in that very long tail. They would both be laughing so hard that they would forget that this was a unique trait that made life a little more of a challenging adventure.

Micoka and Mikola felt sorry for those other mice that did not have the special shared tail. Those folks would not know how fun it was to play all day and laugh and giggle with a sibling and with a very long tail. When it was time to sleep, that tail was the line in the nest that separated them. Mikola’s nose would point south, and Micoka’s nose would point north. They could smell danger coming from either direction. They were never scared. There was nothing to be scared about! And they were always happy, these little sibling mice from Chirwir with the single very long tail.

These sleek haired little grey sibling mice from Chirwir taught a big lesson to all the townsfolk. And they did it just by being themselves! Because they were happy to be the mice with one tail, the others decided to be happy with themselves too. No one in Chirwir was too thin or too fat or too tall or too short or too smart or too anything! In Chirwir, everyone is perfect. In Chirwir, there is a history of kindness. Everything in Chirwir is as perfect as can be. The far away land of Chirwir, is a very fine place indeed.
