In the midst of a drought, a tiny cloud answers a prayer.
“And it came to pass at the seventh time, he said,
Behold, there ariseth a little cloud…”
I Kings 18:44
“It’s going to rain.” I said with a wink. Will, my significant other, just looked at me and huffed. It was the end of June 1999 and the worst drought in several years was just getting started for my county in North West TN. The crops were already showing signs of stress. Will was not happy, watching his hard work in the fields wilt and twist.
“Lord,” I had prayed earlier, “Please send rain to Will’s crops. I so want him to see that prayer and faith does make a difference. Maybe this will open his eyes to your glory.” This prayer was going up as I drove West after work to run errands. I remembered a verse in the Bible about how one tiny cloud brought rain to a drought stricken land. “Lord, one tiny cloud. That’s all I ask.”
As I rounded the curve of the by-pass, I saw it. Lord, could this be it? At that very moment a lightening bolt slashed right through it. My heart about leaped out of my chest. Was I really seeing this?! I hurried to finish my errands, keeping a watchful eye on the cloud that was turning a bit darker.
As I drove back to Will’s farm area I kept praying. And watching the cloud. My radio on, was blaring ZZ top, my heart was pumping. I laughed out loud at the thought of my little mustang Bee-bopping along to the rhythm of ZZ, dragging my little rain cloud behind me like a kite in the sky.
Although Will was skeptical, he said he needed to put up the trucks before we went out to eat “Since it was going to rain.” he said sarcastically. I just smiled and said nothing.
We could see the cloud as we drove 15 miles north to a nearby restaurant. I’ve never prayed so hard!
The next evening Will was in a good mood. He and his hired hand had driven around looking at all the crops after the rain. His hired hand had made the comment, “Gosh! The rain starts on your crops and ends where your crops end! You could call this a ‘Will Higgs rain.” I just smiled. Point made.
“Lord, thank you for listening to and answering our prayers. And thanks Lord, for having a sense of humor.”
