Back in a philosophy class I had, we’d been given that task of argumenting the proposition which titles this article, “All People Are Selfish.”

There are many types of selfishness. From ignoring someone who asks for our help, to not sharing something with anyone, to put ourselves on top of everything else. If you think wisely, you’re sure to have done at least one of the selfish acts mentioned. Everyone did it, so no shame. It is pretty straightforward.

However, something comes complicating this thing that’s so simple. The altruists. Defined as “unselfish people”, we could say that these people have no vestiges of selfishness in their souls, as their whole lives are dedicated to help others, to care about them. An example is Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and many people will gaze you if you call her selfish.

But selfishness isn’t to be chosen. It is human, as human as breathing, as human as making mistakes. For these reasons, no altruist isn’t selfish, as no altruist isn’t human. It is explainable easily:

Everything has a cause. This mean the altruist has the cause to help other people, as a cause that makes him think about them and care about their well-being. What cause could this be? If we search, even just superficially, among the human nature, we’ll find that there’s only one possible thing.

Feeling Good.

Some people only feel good when they sacrifice for others. Although very noble and notorious, it is still their way to achieve pleasure. So, in the end, this leaves every worthy altruist down to another selfish human. This phenom is present in many situations. A friendship, for example, is a mirror of selfishness. Although one cares about his friend (and does it honestly, being able to truly love the friend), he still acts unconsciouslly because the friend brings happiness to him. So, having friends is still, deep inside, a selfish act.

After this argumentation, I happily say I shocked everyone.

This is very true. I try so hard not to be selfish but I hang around my friends because I desire company so that’s selfish.

Thanks for the support. I agree with you Max, but it’s pretty much unavoidable

I agree that most people are selfish, but must see to what extent, and I really dislike those who are really selfish whereby they totally don’t bother how people suffer as long as they gain something..
    very interesting article!
