Anne is forced to say goodbye to her boyfriend who is suddenly being deployed. Wondering if he will ever come home she recieves a letter that changes the whole situation unraveling before her.
It was almost two years ago that Anne got the news of a fallen hero. She was with his family when the news first arrived on the new that a few American Soldiers had been attacked, and didn’t make it. They all longed to know who it had been. It was three years ago that she had received the news that her boyfriend had to deploy. Two days later he was boarding a plane with only hopes of returning home.
Three days after the news of the attack came a soldier at his family’s doorstep. It had been the weekly routine since she and her boyfriend, Shane, had been together to do lunch with his family. His mom, Milldred answered the door and fell to the ground crying. Everybody knew what was meant when they came to your door. Anne ran to her hearing the screams and hysterical crying from the other room. She stopped cold when she saw what and who it was.
Her heart dropped. Tears running down her face. Ed, Shane’s father, came to the door knowing what had happened from the reaction. He picked his wife of 43years up off the floor into his arms. The soldier at the door, Mitch, handed Anne the envelope, and hugging her. She knew Mitch from when Shane was in training. They became close friends, and were always going out together.
Ed had taken Milldred into the study. Anne watched the soldiers leave and didn’t want the truth. She wanted to believe that he was still coming home alive. Handing the envelope to Ed she noticed the picture frame turned upside down where the picture of shane had been. Was he disappointed with his son choices to join the army to serve our country?
The letter was read stating that shane had been announced as MIA(Missing In Action), and a further investigation would be done. Anne didn’t want to hear any of it she was still trying to process what had just happened. Her boyfriend of 5years now was gone, and there was nothing she could do. It was either of their choices either which made it harder. What had happened to him? What if he was still alive?
That night Mitch showed up at her door with a chocolate cake. He had learned by now that chocolate anything could help the start of a cure over anything. That was when she got more detail on what had actually happened. Mitch was on active duty with Shane that day. After the attack he was relieved of his duty and sent to lighter duty here.
