The story of a ground hog, who would not stop to play, because he knew he had work to do.

Mister Woodchuck, also called Grady Ground Hog
Was running, running, running from old Cyclone, the Farmer’s dog.
Reaching the safety of his burrow house
Grady ducked inside as quick as a mouse.
Old Cyclone sniffed and sniffed all around.
But Grady just couldn’t be found.

A while later Rogan Fox came by
“Grady, let’s play. It’s a clear blue sky!”
“Sorry, Rogan. I’ve got a job to do.
I can’t stop and play with you.”
“Job? You mean WORK?” asked Rogan
“Yes,” said Grady. “My job helps me and maybe helps man.”
“You help man?” Rogan asked, “how?”
“When I dig the ground for me, I think it helps him somehow.”

Grady needed to make his little burrow home, big.
So he began to dig and dig and dig.
Working under the ground he couldn’t see.
That he was helping the little apple tree.
The apple tree’s ground was very hard.
For the children used it as a play yard.
But Grady’s digging made the soil soft again.
And the rain and the air healed the tree from its pain.
The little apple tree grew and grew and grew!
Grady had helped the little tree much more than he knew.
The Farmer was so happy and told old Cyclone
Not to chase Grady, just to leave him alone.
And the Farmer let Grady take an apple now and then
Because Grady would cultivate the soil again and again.
The cultivated soil helped all the farm plants grow big,
So Grady’s important job was to dig, and dig, and dig
