A short story for English class.
Men have ruled civilizations since the dawn of time. It could be easily concluded that the rulers and kings of the olden days kept peace and order in their kingdom or city. But men’s inevitable
lust for power has tainted their hearts and minds influenced them to do ruthless things to gain power. Ever since politics began, corruption has always lurked there and would soon tear the world asunder…
Doris sat in his hover-chair, pondering over the situation the world was in and how it affected his life severely, when a knock abruptly broke his concentration.
“Come in” muttered Doris. A young woman, no more than 25, strode gracefully inside. Doris recognized this woman immediately, for it was none other than his best friend Beth.
“Ah! ! Excellent timing! Do sit down” said Doris in an enthusiastic voice.
“Lucky for you, I just barely reached here safely” muttered Beth in a slightly annoyed tone. At the harsh tone of Beth’s voice, Doris couldn’t help but have sympathy. Doris remembered a time, roughly around 2000-2025, when innocent humans can go out in the streets of London and not worry about being hit by a paralysis beam, pick pocketed or even killed if you protested. Those days Doris thought was to be taken for granted, but he was apparently wrong.
Ever since Robert Worthsman and his cronies moved in political power in 2026 and caused disorder in the world, life is a daily struggle to survive for many. But not for Doris. Doris was fortunate enough to inhabit a city that is still sane, somewhere situated away from all the chaos and violence. But Doris knows this city won’t stand for long. Soon, he would have to fight for survival with or without an ally.
“Doris, I have some news for you” said Beth.
“Do tell,” replied Doris.
“I have heard that Worthsman’s Mech-Army is moving south to capture and demolish this city!” stammered Beth.
“As I predicted,” said Doris with a sigh.
“We would have to depart very soon, probably in a matter of days” insisted Beth.
“I guess so. Thanks for your help Beth. I knew I could rely on you,” said Doris with a hint of fondness.
“Yeah, we are still best mates aren’t we?” asked Beth.
“Yes, and I hope neither Worthsman nor this crisis would change that” replied Doris.
“You should get some sleep, you look awfully tired” suggested Beth.
“Yeah, guess I should” said Doris “You could sleep in the guest room”
“That I will do. Thanks Doris!”
They both strode into their separate rooms, washed up, then commanded the lights to vanish as they climbed into their Chambers. Soon, they were both sound asleep and not a sound was heard.
Doris knew it was morning. Perhaps it was the alarm echoing in his Chamber or the steady ray of sunlight streaming through his Liquid – Gaia windows. Doris peered at his watch: 7:45 AM. Overtime. Doris hurriedly got dressed, washed up and went out of his Chamber. In the kitchen, Beth was programming the Auto – Hob to cook hers and Doris’s favorite meals.
