A short story based on the ancient Greek tale of Narcissus, a man who falls in lovve with himself.

Daniel stood there stunned. Too shocked to speak. Too numb to move.

Rain started to plummet down on the two men.
The green lush grass was stained a bitter red, from all the bloodshed.
Daniel collected himself and stepped over Anthony, picked up his blood-stained sword, wiped it on the wet ground, and left.
He left a scared and confused person

“He just left? Just like that?” Mary said astonished.
“You did ask for a tragic love story didn’t you? Well the tragedy isn’t over yet, there’s still more.”
Mary moved closer to her grandfather and waited for him to continue.

5 years later.

Daniel had become a depressed and reclusive man after Anthony’s death. He did not miss him, he was just afraid of Anthony’s one and only death wish.

“I pray that one day you will feel the love I feel for you.
And I wish that what you love can NEVER LOVE YOU BACK!”

It had shook Daniel to the core, to this day he still got a chill whenever people mentioned his name and his mysterious and sudden disappearance. Daniel had never told them that Anthony had killed himself for love, for Daniel.

Today was the king’s birthday; he had declared it compulsory for everybody to attend and to help with the preparations. Daniel had no choice, he would be thrown into the castle dungeon if he refused to oblige to the king’s wishes.

Everywhere was extravagantly decorated to the nines: fairy lights hung from the trees, tables topped with large fragrant flowers, dishes filled with traditional finger foods, cauldrons containing soup to feed many. All the people had helped to make the king’s birthday what it is; everybody had been assigned a job. Daniel’s was to retrieve fish eggs to make the caviar.

Daniel resented such a peasant-like job but grudgingly accepted it. He had to help his people in every possible way. He took out the fishing nets needed to salvage the fish eggs, went out of the castle, and into the forest to look for the perfect pond.

He stopped when he thought he was going the wrong way, but he couldn’t be going the wrong way. This is the forest he used to walk through with his mother; he knew this forest inside out. According to Daniel’s memories there had never been a crystal clear pond in this part of the forest, nor had there ever been a bush with yellow roses. The unfamiliarity of the location perplexed and baffled Daniel, but he decided that the pond could shelter many, many fish eggs.
He set his equipment down by the pond, making sure he set down his sword right beside him, just in case he needed it.

Slowly, ever so slowly Daniel unraveled the net and threw it into the water, causing ripples to travel on the pond’s surface. The water caught Daniel’s attention. He starred into it, trying to recognize the face curiously gazing back at him.
It was such a beautiful sight for Daniel; he had never seen somebody so enticing, so gorgeous in his life. He had, instantly fallen in love.
He stretched out his hand and tried to hold the hand of this mysterious person in the misty depths of the water. Daniel realized that there was nobody in the water; it hit him like a brick. There was nobody deep inside the water, it was just his reflection.
How could the most stunning man staring back at him, be just his reflection?
If only he leaned in that bit further, he could reach his truly beloved.
Daniel misjudged the depth of the pond.
Daniel fell into the water, struggling to breathe he tried to reach for land, he grabbed his sword. He was in too deep to reach the surface, but not deep enough to touch the bottom. He could feel himself sinking deeper into the pit of the pond. It was as if somebody was dragging him down to his watery grave.

Daniel had become conscience that this was not coincidence, it’s the curse Anthony had put on him.
Daniel started to fight, but the water wanted him in its depths more than he could last without air.

Daniel died in that pond; he drowned because of Anthony’s ever-lasting love.

And they call this tragedy.
