His grandfather’s story of an unexplained disaster, troubles a teenage ant.
Andrew at seventeen days old and nearing completion of high school, had a very inquisitive mind. One day when his grandfather was reading their holy book, the Antlog, he had asked if he believed all that was written there. Having been raised in a religious family and taught all the tenets of the church, the old ant answered in the affirmative, saying with complete faith, “yes my son, the Antlog contains the truth for all who would enter the kingdom of the Antgod”. Andrew however, had his owns thoughts and decided to question further. “I’ve read that all ants don’t believe alike, in fact there are said to be seven great religions in the ant world, each with their own holy book and all believing that they alone are the true religion”. Grandfather closed the Antlog and laid it reverently on a nearby table. “We are not to judge”, the old man said softly, “Shall not the Great Antgod who sees all, do right”? Andrew stood there for a moment and felt the wisdom of the words. His grandfather, he thought was a very enlightened ant.
Later, as he stood outside gazing up at the sky with it’s countless stars millions of centimetres away, he suddenly felt very small and insignificant. That there were creatures much smaller than ants, he knew for certain, for they ate their carcases almost every day, he had even see some that were larger and whose flesh he’d also eaten. His thoughts turned again to his grandfather’s story, a part of history now, having happened almost ninety days ago, a lifetime for most ants. Few of the younger generation even thought of it anymore, but Andrew was different, he was always coming up with new theories. Of course, he rarely spoke of them as he didn’t want to be considered “strange” by his peers. Now his mind was doing laps again as new thoughts raced around in his brain. Is it possible he wondered, that there are beings so big that we cannot comprehend them, so large that our ant brain cannot fathom such a thought? Could it be that such a giant super beast might have walked by the colony that fateful hour, so many days ago now, and set it’s foot in the anthill for just a moment in time? Maybe it was going about whatever such giants might do with their heads in the clouds, completely unaware of anything until attacked by the ant soldiers? For a moment he imagined those brave soldiers being brushed away by a gigantic hand and being tossed several millimetres into the air. He shivered at the thought that such a brute could exist, perhaps more than a hundred or more centimetres tall. He wondered what such creatures would look like, and what they would think of their idea of an Antgod who lived somewhere above the clouds? Could such a being even be a God itself? surely nothing else could be greater! Andrew heard his name being called and waved to some school chums going for a swim at the nearby aqua arena. He ran to join them, stopping to pick up his swimming trunks on the way, it was time to get these crazy thoughts out of his mind or the ants in white suits would be coming for him.
