Athena, Greek Goddess of war and nature, is having her dinner tonight amongst the critters of the forest.
She shall dine on only the best the forest has to offer. Fresh salads served and prepared by the wood nymphs. Venison just killed and cleaned by Athena herself, and the best wine in Greece, courtesy of Pan, the God of love and wine. This is some of the best food in Greece, fit only for a Goddess.
The wood nymphs, and others of the woodland animals serve her meal. Normally it is Athena’s style to ear quickly and alone. Today, that is not the case. This is a great time of peace for Greece, and the Gods have had little to do. Athena hunts only for necessity, and she has food and clothes. So, she cannot hunt, and there are no battles. For once, she takes time as she enjoys her meal.
As she eats, a strange shape emerges from the trees. As it comes closer, she sees the most beautiful boy she has ever seen. Out of the trees had walked Narcissus. When Athena saw him, she was instantly love-struck. She invited him to stay for dinner, and he accepted. He sat down and was instantly brought only the best in Greece.
As they dined, they talked. Mostly Narcissus talked about himself. Athena didn’t mind though. She was too caught up in how he looked. He explained about his journeys, and she could do nothing but watch him speak.
Narcissus talked of his past, and of how Tiresias, the seer, had told his parents that he “would live to an old age if he did not look at himself.” He found that to be ridiculous because he was beautiful, and all the women and girls he had met had fallen in love with him. But, if you know the story, then you know that Echo, one of the nymphs, fell so madly in love with him that she followed him through the forest. She had followed him to his dinner with Athena. Now, because Athena was a Goddess, she was not only beautiful, but smart and strong as well.
She caught on quickly to the face that Echo was there, and to why she was there. However, she had also fallen in love with Narcissus, and did not want to lose him to her or anyone. They finished their dinner; all the while Athena was watching Echo, who was watchin Narcissus. After they finished, Narcissus and Athena parted ways, and Narcissus continued on his journey.
