Karen stepped around her husband’s tools to get to the oven. He looked up at her and grinned. It seemed that he was almost done with fixing the kitchen sink.

She slid the baking tray, laden with pork chops, into the oven. Then, she sat down beside her husband.

“Almost finished?”

“In another five minutes I will be.”

Karen knew that Sean could now be approached about the topic she had on her mind. “Honey, I’ve been thinking that we could do a little repainting for autumn.”

“Can we afford it?”

Her husband’s reply gave Karen pause. She had been hoping he wouldn’t reach to that point so quickly.

“I want the house to feel fresh. We keep budgeting and putting things for the house off until next time. I’m tired of the sameness.”

Sean didn’t say anything for a while. He was screwing the pipes back in place but she knew that he was also thinking about what she had just said.

A minute later he straightened up, winked at her and took her hand.

“I have an idea.”

Hand in hand they headed out to the back of the house.

Autumn leaves had already layered the ground and the rich colors reminded Karen yet again of how dull she felt her house looked. Well, maybe not dull but it had looked the same for a while and she really needed something different.

Her husband began to tell her of his idea. Soon, they were both working hard, first with leaves and twigs, then with other items foraged from around the house.

They took a break to enjoy the pork chops and Karen put the remainder in the freezer.

When sleep finally overtook them, it was 2a.m.

Karen went to sleep dreaming of the change she and her husband had made in their home. They had made arrangements of pears, persimmon and other autumn fruit, with the flowers in their yard. One of the arrangements was now the centerpiece for the dining table.

They had also used leaves in different colors to make a centerpiece in their kitchen after spraying them with a coat of sealer.

They had also collected some sturdier branches to construct shelves, one of which now housed their favorite magazines.

The house was brighter and it did look different, although it wasn’t the paint job she had hoped for.
