I have been teasing a chat friend for over a year about an imaginary pet named WiGgle. That has let to me writing a poem and this little story about a little girl. A story for children.
Down the country road where the road turns left you will find a farm house on the right. This is where Becky lived. Becky was a bright red haired little girl. She lived with her parents and with her mother’s three big Persian cats.
Their names were Lance, Percy and Gwen. Lance was black and could always be found sitting on top of the refrigerator. Percy was red and his favorite spot was Becky’s mother’s lap. Gwen was smoky gray and tended to have a different favorite spot each day. Gwen’s favorite sleeping place each night was on the corner of Becky’s bed.
Becky could play all day. Those three cats would watch her. But Becky wanted them to play with her. But they were not kittens.
Lance, Percy and Gwen liked watching Becky play parade most of all. Becky would get out her toy drum, red boots and band hat with a feather on top. Then she marched around the house banging on the drum and calling out. “Forward march. Right turn, march! Left turn, march!”
Lance, Percy and Gwen would sit in a row and watch Becky as she marched by. But they didn’t do anymore than watch.
Mother could see that Becky wanted someone to play with. But Becky was too young to start school and since they lived in the country, they didn’t have neighbors.
Then one day while Becky was playing with her magnetic alphabet, mother brought her a surprise. Mother walked up quietly and was about to give her the surprise when it pounced out of her hands and made Becky spill all the letters.
It was a very little white kitten with a black tip at the end of its wiggling tail. Becky gasped in delightful surprise.
“Do you have a name for your kitten?” her mother asked.
“Dunno”
The kitten was playing with one of the letters and mother picked it up. It was a capital W. Mother put it on the refrigerator, “I think the kitten wants a name that starts with W.”
The kitten was now playing with another letter and Becky took it away. It was the letter i. She handed it to her mother, who put it on the refrigerator next to the W. Mother giggled when she said Wi. Becky also giggled. They both looked at the kitten and she was sitting on another letter looking up at them curiously. Becky got the letter and it was a capital G. She put it up with the other letters to see WiG.
“WiG”, her mother said, “That must be the start of the name.”
Becky giggled and looked down at the kitten, which was now strutting around wiggling its tail. Becky smiled big and said, “WiGgle!”
WiGgle rolled over purring loudly when Becky said its name.
Becky was excited and wanted to celebrate. She quickly went to her room and put on her parade boots and hat and got out her drum. She then marched back into the kitchen expecting WiGgle to join her. But WiGgle was playing with the letters.
Mother smiled and said, “I know what to do.” Mother then got a long piece of material, folded it and sewed it. Then she tied it around Becky’s waist with it hanging down and dragging behind her.
Becky then beat on her drum and began to march around. WiGgle saw the tail and pounced on it as it went by. WiGgle then chased it this way and that. Becky just giggled and giggled. This got the attention of Lance, Percy and Gwen. They came to the kitchen and sat together. There they saw Becky march by followed by Becky’s WiGgle pouncing on the tail.
