Emily lives on her own in a cottage and Billie, her dog, is her only companion. She takes him for a walk and Billie keeps pulling into the forest further. There they found a little baby deer. The forester tells Emily not to let the dog into the forest but then he saw why Billie insisted. He takes the little deer home and Emily visits him daily to see how the deer getting on. The deer grows up and the forester makes sure it will go back to life it should have. Emily and the forest getting to know each other more and more.

From there on Emily resumed her daily routine. In the morning they went through the cornfield, meadows, forest, over the little bridge and back on the other side of the river. In the evening, they went down to village and Emily went over to Mr Mills to see how the little deer was getting on.

One day the enclosure was empty and the forester was also not at home. Emily was quite concerned what had happened. The next morning she went straighaway down to the village and over to the forester’s cottage. Again the enclosure was empty and the forester was not there. Emily was now really worried.

The next morning Emily and Billie went up to the forest and she told Billie to stay there were she tied him to a tree. She went into the forest. There she saw Mr Mills at a distance and he made signs to keep quiet and go away.

Two days later, at noon, the forester came up the garden path while Emily and Billie sat outside.

“I am sorry about the other day but I put the deer into the forest and tried to keep an eye on it. The first few days I was living there and tried to teach it to cope with a life in the forest. Thank goodness, it looks like she’ll be all right.”

“Would you like a cup of tee and I baked a cake. Would you like a piece,” offered Emily.

“Yes please, I really would appreciate it. It was a bit hectic the last few days,” said Mr Mills. He stayed all afternoon and they had a good talk. He left to check up, once more, on the deer.

Soon after, the forester told Emily that the deer joined a herd and would be all right now. It made Emily really happy.

“Look Emily, I had to take out a wild boar and kept some meat for myself. I am not a very good cook but would you like to come over and have some stew?”

“Thank you very much. Yes, I would like that very much,” replied Emily.
