Basil Blue Jay is a detective for the Bird’s Eye View detective agency. Mrs. Sparrow comes to see him about her missing husband. Mr. Sparrow is a faithful, loving family man, who also happens to be a friend to Basil. So, Basil sets out to find his friend, and help ease Mrs. Sparrow’s sorrow.
“Can I have a look?” He asked.
“Why no of course not, you understand the rules. Nobody but next of kin is allowed into the room.” She honked louder.
“You know Ethel,” he said as he began to stroke her crown feathers. “You are a kind hearted good looking kind of a gal. So, how can you know next of kin, when you don’t know who you have? Just let me go peak and see if I know him.”
“Well, you always treat me so kindly. I guess it wouldn’t hurt for you to just peak and see if you know him. Come back here and tell me, cause we need to notify the next of kin.” Ethel said while blinking her eyes.
“Just tell me the room number and I’ll be back in a flash.”
Basil flittered down the hall, and found the room and hoped that when he peaked in he’d find his friend Ron Sparrow. With no identification and a case of amnesia, no wonder no one had called his wife or the plant. He flittered around the corner, and peaked in, and there his friend laid, with a bandage around his head, and a couple of bandages on his left wing. Looking left then right, Basil entered the room. He had to know what happened.
“Ron is that you? Are you there Ron? Do you recognize my voice?
“Uh, I can’t see you very well. Do I know you?”
“Yes, we meet at least once a week at the Fly-Inn. I’m Basil Blue Jay. Sarra is worried.” Basil said carefully.
“Sarra? Basil Blue Jay? Basil…Yes, I remember you. We usually play a game of pool on Tuesday.” Ron said. “That’s my name Ron. Oh my God, Sarra. She doesn’t know where I am.” Ron began to panic, and he started to get up, and find his bearings to go home.
“Wait a minute Ron settle down. Sarra came to me to find you. I’ll go talk to her in a few minutes. I want to know if you can remember anything about why you’re here.”
Ron seemed to take several breaths, and looked up at the sky as if he could see the memory above. “Let me think. Yes, I remember a little Greg Grackle was abusing his friend Gayla. I being the stupid chivalrous male attempted to stop him from being so abusing. I think after I tried to tell Gayla to leave the creep, he beaked me. Ugh. I just don’t remember anything else. I have no clue as to how I ended up here.” Ron relaxed and then said, “Whew, I’m exhausted. Will you go tell Sarra where I’m at, and that I’m OK? Also, will you tell her I love her?
“You bet Ron, I’ll take care of Sarra, and you get more rest.” Basil said and flew out the door, and down to Ethel Goose. Ethel, I know him, and I’m going to notify his spouse.”
“No, it has to be one of us.”
“Ethel I’m a detective, and you know me, I’ll be back in a jiffy with Mrs. Ron Sparrow. You need to trust me.”
As Basil flew off, the papers on Ethel’s desk scattered everywhere. He didn’t even stop to help her. This was one time, speed was important. Flying the straight route, he made it to the Sparrow’s house, and rang their door bell. Mrs. Sparrow opened the door, and she turned a lighter shade of pale.
“It’s OK Sarra. He’s at the Red Wing Hospital. He told me to tell you he’s alright, and that he loves you. He tried to stop an abusive situation between another couple and almost got beaked to death.”
“Oh thank heaven. Let me get the kids settled and I’ll go there to him. How can I ever pay you Basil?”
“Ron is my friend. I’d do anything for him. If you run across a peanut or two let me know. That’s good enough payment for me. You head on over to the hospital, and I’m going to track down a Gayla and Greg Grackle. I think there is more to this story than just a lover’s quarrel.” Basil stated to Sarra. “I’ll be back and check on things tomorrow. For today, I’m out to find the rest of this story.”
