A housewife, suspecting her husband of committing adultery, pours boiling cooking oil on him.
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, or in the case of a 33-year-old woman in Busan, hell hath no fury like a woman who suspects her husband of committing adultery and then pours boiling oil on him while he is asleep.
According to police in Busan, the wife boiled the oil and poured it onto the head and chest of her husband who was sleeping on a sofa at home. It caused injuries that will take 12 weeks to heal.
“She was being treated for depression and suspected her husband of adultery, so she tried to kill him,” a police officer said in the article reported by the Korea Times.
Although adultery is punishable offense in Korea if caught and convicted, this woman decided to take matters in her own hands. Sort of reminds me of that movie The Burning Bed (1984), which was based on the book of the same name about a battered and abused Michigan housewife who, after 13 years of domestic abuse, set fire to the bed he was sleeping in and who was subsequently killed and the house destroyed in the resulting inferno.
Of course, things can get a little dicey for cheating husbands in Thailand who are caught by their wives. Back in the late mid 90s I read a few articles in the Bangkok Post about housewives castrating their husbands while they slept, and in one bizarre incident, the wife attached the severed organ to a helium-filled balloon-a bit like what Lorena Bobbit did in 1993.
Attempted murder and boiling cooking oil aside, one thing that I have found interesting about the way that these stories are reported by the Korean press when someone is hurt or injured (like the Korean pop singer who had his nose broken in a car accident the other day) is how there’s always the mention of how long it is going to take to heal or how many treatments are required. I can’t recall seeing this anywhere else that I’ve been overseas when someone has been hurt in an accident-just Korea.
Incidentally, the Korean pop singer who also hurt his back in the accident-four months to recover.
