The result of a writing exercise.
Attention! I said stand at attention! Ball your fists tighter. Point your thumb down straight at the ground at a ninety degree angle. Click your heals together when you snap your body rigid. Make your feet part at a forty five degree angle. Keep your back straight. Keep your shoulders aligned. Don’t lock your knees or you will pass out. Keep your eyes straight ahead. Keep your chin up, your chest puffed out, your gut sucked in. Look at the back of the main in front of you’s head.
At ease! Snap your feet out, shoulder width. Snap your hands around to your back. Create a “V” with them in the small of your back. Keep your back straight. Keep your shoulders aligned. Don’t lock your knees or you’ll pass out. Keep your eyes straight ahead. Keep your chin up, your chest puffed out, your gut sucked in. Feel no ease within yourself, whatsoever. Never relax.
Front leaning rest position, HUAH! Drop to your face. Create a right triangle with your body. Lock your elbows. Look at the asphalt. DOWN! Bend your elbows. Touch your nose to the ground, maggot. Do not let your belly touch though. Don’t let your chest touch. Do not bend your knees or your back. You must be a right triangle. UP! Push yourself back up. Do not bend anything but your elbows. DOWN! Bend your elbows once more. Repeat as many times as you are told. Listen only to me. Do not listen to the burning sensation in your biceps. Do not listen to the aching feeling in your toes. Do not look at the reflection of yourself in the rapidly growing puddle of sweat beneath your head. Do not worry about the asphalt digging into your palms. Just keep pushing
At ease! Attention! Forward HUAH! Listen to your Drill Instructor. Listen to your Mother, Father, God. March in cadence. Sing the song. Make sure you step in time. Keep your thumbs pointed down at the ground. Swing your arms in a ninety degree angle. Step in three foot increments. Stay directly behind the soldier in front of you. Do not look around. Keep your eyes forward. Do not bob up and down. March like you know what you are doing.
Stay awake even though you are more exhausted than you’ve ever been. Do not fall asleep while marching. Obey the commands. Remember your oath. Mark time, HUAH! March in place. Get your knees up higher. Remember your training. If you die, you die a hero.
Go to war. Shoot the enemy. Shoot the man whose way of life we threaten. Shoot the man who threatens our way of life. Shoot the man who threatens not only your way, but your life in general. Shoot the man who threatens your brother’s life, your mother’s life, your pastor’s life. Shoot the man who would shoot you. Don’t give him that chance. Don’t let him draw that bead on you. Always be vigilant.
