A short story about a man’s birthday “celebrations” on 4th of July.
“Get behind something!” Doug commanded as she focused once again on Charlene sprinting towards the statue of Nicholas Cruz, the self acclaimed ‘god’ of this world.
The screen flashed in an immense of bright colors mixed with dark colors from the metal. “Wow, this is incredible. These fireworks are much more enjoyable than the ones back in the 21st.” Doug joyingly watched the fireworks as he leaned back in his chair and watched the fire, metal, and lights flash on the screen. Each explosion spread shrapnel all over the scene, destroying many of the landmarks stationed in the park. “If only I was there…” Doug muttered.
“Not if you’re this close to the firecrackers!” Charlene shouted over the headset despite all the destruction.
“Feels like I might have a seizure!” Doug commented at the flashes through the screen.
Eventually, the screen started to darken as the park was left in rubble. The ground is either charred or covered with shrapnel. Many of the statues of Nicholas have been shattered in the explosion and are left in dust or crumbs. The propoganda billboards bordering the park are ablaze as they burn away in the night. “Fireworks are always best at night.” Doug commented on the aftermath.
“My men…My friends…My family…”
“I’m sorry, Charlene. They will be honored. I promise, we will overthrow Nicholas and his cynical government. They have far too long exploited our resources and corrupted our people into extortion, betrayal, murder, trafficking, all that. We have know made ourselves know to the world and we are not a group to be easily controlled. We will bring back the traditions and the government we once had back in the old days in America. We will celebrate 4th of July and my birthday with actual fireworks, parades, barbecues, concerts, baseball, without the need of violence or bloodshed. I promise this.”
Doug overheard Charlene’s breathing as she stayed silent through his small speech. He focused the screen upon her as he saw her gazing upon her palm. Suddenly, she looked up into the night sky and witnessed something incredible.
“Look! It’s fireworks!” Charlene screamed with joy over the headset.
Doug quickly shuffled through the various screens and found the screen depicting the whole city from an aerial view. He spotted colored flames and sparks in the sky as they danced over the city.
“Actual fireworks?!” Doug shouted in awe as he stood.
“Yes! I think it’s coming from the people. They must be celebrating our victory.”
Doug swiftly turned his chair around and ran out of the room and camped on his apartment room’s balcony. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Fireworks with a beautiful feel to it. “So beautiful. Better than the one a few minutes ago.” He looked over the railing as he saw a parade outside his apartment complex. They cheered, laughed, and walked the streets with joy. Doug smiled as he gazed upon the artistic bliss of lights in the night sky. “Can’t wait for my next birthday.”
