Short Tale I imagined…

Call centre short story.

Vince Miotti stood in the cold October air carefully rolling his cigarette through his middle and index finger as he nervously thought about the revenge plan of the century. His 23 year old son Ryan had been killed in Iraq during war, 2 months ago. He had been the victim of a hostage situation in which he was shot in the lower half of his leg then brutally beaten and finally had his life taken by another shot the back of the head after not divulging information of his base camp.

Vince currently worked in a call centre which is part of MI5, after 25 years of service Vince had uncovered some information which would lead him to his own demise. Vince had worked as an explosives consultant throughout the gulf war in the early 90’s and following the death of his son in Iraq due to the government sending troops to seriously dangerous areas, Vince’ days were unfortunately numbered as MI5 had a £95k redundancy package ready for him.

‘He has to go; his mind is blatantly not on the job in hand after what has happened!’ Lieutenant Crosby demanded.

‘Its not that, he has 25 years worth of experience which, is completely invaluable to us as this moment in time’ Phil Peters remarked.

Lt. Crosby poked his index finger through the conference room blinds looking out over the 500 strong call centre which relayed vital information to troops, business’ and vital camps over the world. He sighed and let them drop after catching a glimpse of Vince’ desk which was situated at the top of the room.

‘We’re sending a confirmation letter to him today, it will get there Monday, case closed. I feel his pain, but the redundancy package will ease that.’ Crosby added.

Phil Peters silently got up and made his way to the door, Peters has worked at MI5 for 30 years and is the head of recruitment.

‘You’re making a big mistake with this; he is potentially our best man.’ He added on his way out.

Peters made his way to Vince’ desk and left him a note informing him to take the rest of the bleak Friday off. Vince saw the note an hour later and collected his jacket and left.

Back at home, Vince realised he was alone as his wife Cheryl had left under stress to stay with her mother indefinitely, she’d left a list of shopping and a note saying she loved him and that she needed time to think.
