Poppie and his granddaughter visit the barnyard to feed the chickens.

The following manuscript is my first attempt at a children’s picture book that was inspired by my granddaughter and her affection for feeding our chickens with my husband-Poppie. I have an avid interest in children’s literature and am desirous of professional and honest feedback on developing my skills in this genre.

Chickens in the barn yard

Pecking at the ground

Search for bits of food to eat,

There’s little to be found.

————————————————

Chickens of all colors,

Speckled, white, and black,

Search for bits of food to eat

In every nook and crack.

————————————————

Chickens big and chickens small,

Strutting all around

Search for bits of food to eat-

Now, do you hear that sound?

————————————————–

Chickens running to and fro

Because they have a hunch

Someone’s bringing food to eat;

Oh, yes! It’s time for lunch!

—————————————————

Chickens clucking noisily;

They all fly from their nests.

It’s Poppie with his bag of feed

And Baby as his guest.

————————————————–

Baby in the barn yard

Sits on Poppie’s knee

To toss the bits of food to eat

And claps and laughs with glee.

—————————————————-

Chickens in the barn yard

Pecking at the ground,

Find the bits of food to eat

That Poppie throws around.

—————————————————–

Now lunch time is over;

It’s time for hens to nest.

And Poppie and his baby

Go home to take a rest.

    Good job. Easy and fun to read. Would love to see it with pictures. I also write for children and teens. My target is mid-grade level. Ii is very hard to get anything published. I know. Don’t give up. I am writing a book about our dogs: Katie and Kole. Maybe one day it will be in bookstores. Keep going.

    That is cute, Martha. It would be great for little children because of the meter, the rhyme, and how short it is.
