About chipmunks…. Part three.
As the days get cooler and cooler, every good chipmunk’s pile of nuts and seeds gets higher and higher. When the pile of food is so high his bed almost touches the ceiling, Chippie’s work will be done. It will be time for Chippie to snuggle up on his bed of leaves. The busy little fellow must be very tired by now. He curls up and falls fast asleep.
Every few days he will wake up hungry. When he does, he will reach under his bed for a snack and then go back to sleep. On sunny winter days he, may leave his burrow for a drink, but most of the winter Chippie will stay on his leaf bed atop the nuts and seeds.
What a happy day it is when Chippie can come out of his burrow in spring! Chipmunks are very friendly. They will run into other’s burrows as if to say, “Hello! Did you have a nice nap?” Then they will sit and “talk” and “sing” to each other.
Would you like to make friends with a chipmunk? You must remember that they are very shy animals. They scare very easily and run away. But if you stand very still and leave nuts, seeds, and small pieces of bread on the ground for them day after day, a chipmunk might one day hop right up to you as if to say, “Well, what do you have for me today?”
