Written through a writing prompt, about a special community.

It was the night of a community meeting. Usually Sally would not attend these, but hell she figured she’d try it once at least. Walking into the building she noticed tons of senior citizens. There might have been ten younger people, but Sally still felt out of place.

Shortly after she’d gotten there an ancient man walked up to the front table. Sally wondered how he could even walk. His skin was so stretched against his bones. When he moved she swore she could hear the bones rubbing against each other, protesting the movement.

The man introduced himself as George Conner the President of the group. Everyone clapped loudly for him. So Sally joined in not wanted to be outside the group.

“Ok tonight we’re going over the plans for the monthly celebration.” Several people stuck their hands up. George pointed to an older woman, “Go ahead Hilda.”

“Well has a theme been picked yet?”

“Not yet we’re going to pick out three favorites tonight, then next week we’ll decide.”

“I have one then, Younger Celebration. Since the younger one’s are going to be the main part of the get together.” Hilda said. George wrote the idea on a board.

Pointing to one of the younger people, “Paul you have an idea?”

“Sure do, well actually both Sheila and I thought it up, Babies are us.”

“That’s a good one.” George pointed at a few more people who had ideas. Sally listened as themes of “feel young again”, “whose kid is that”, and “Get um well their fresh. She wondered if all the people in these meetings were pedophiles or what? Well the group narrowed the choice down to, “Younger celebration”, “Babies are us”, and “Whose kid is that?”

“George let’s pick the theme now.” An old lady called from the back.

“Ok, will do. Clap for the one you like after I say the name.” Younger celebration won by a landslide. “Now who’s going to be able to supply some of the food?” “Yes Judy?”

“I can get three or four.” Judy said.

“We can probably have six or seven.” Paul said.

“Paul I commend you and Sheila that’s a great amount.” George said.

“We have a very special dish we’ll be bringing this year.” An older couple stood up together.

“Great, can’t wait to taste it.” George exclaimed.

Sally had never heard of these get togethers before, of course she didn’t pay much attention to what happened around here.

“Ok, how about we move the celebration up to next weekend?”

“Everyone agreed with that idea.”

“See you all next weekend.” George finished the meeting.

Sally wanted to know about the festival. So she went to one of the other couples and asked, “Is there anything else I can provide?”

“Well sure sweetie, if you have anyway to get some young ones that would be great. Or you can make your favorite young one dish.”

“This is my first time; could you explain to me exactly what you mean by young ones?”

“Oh of course, we mean young children.”

“Is this festival for them? I mean should I bring kids type of foods?”

“No dearie they are the food.”
