Story.
It was what could normally be considered a nice day up in Aberdeen; the sky was clear and the sun was out and everything seemed normal. However, close nearby an archaeological dig was taking place. Ancient and mysterious metals were discovered in a hill about 5 miles northeast of Aberdeen and an expert archaeological team were sent out by the government to investigate it.
The leader of this team was archaeologist Matthew Davis, he was an army archaeologist that had been sent to find out what was going on. Due to new found properties and mysterious energy readings this new metal was taken over by the British army.
‘I’ve found something!’ yelled an archaeologist working for Matthew
His reply was short and simple ‘What?’
‘It’s an artifact, it resembles the artifact that we found in Glasgow a few years ago’
‘You certain?’
‘Positive only this one’s still intact.’
Three years ago Matthew and his team, being on the army’s pay role, were told to investigate a mysterious object in Glasgow and had discovered that the device was some sort of extra terrestrial engine for a space craft of some sort. Obviously they were laughed at by everyone, apart from the military who seemed to not only take them seriously but found no surprise at their report. From then on Matthew was employed by the military for lots of different studies and now works for them on a permanent basis.
He reported for fitness training and was as physically fit as your average army man. He has since been privy to classified information on the subject of extra terrestrials that a certain number of countries have access to.
It all started in America at Roswell when an alien fighter was shot down, since then the American Air force has had access to a number of different technologies that they have salvaged from various crashed ships. This was kept secret for years until it was uncovered by Russian secret agents and was then introduced to the eight most powerful countries in the world, Britain being among those countries.
This was not all that helpful, for America used the technologies they found for their own purposes and kept them secret from everyone else. Since no one has had any way of locating these technologies like America no other countries has been able to develop anything, the USA even had extremely powerful space flight capable of the fastest travel known to man next to light speed, however these new discoveries in Scotland has started to give Britain insight into alien devices and for the first time may even make studying alien technology a realistic possibility.
Matthew studied the device for a minute, ‘this metal is stronger than anything else we’ve ever encountered, we should give it a name.’ he said at last
His assistant looked at him ‘How about Tritanium?’ They both thought for a moment and agreed.
At that moment Colonel Jones walked in, ‘heard you found something’ he spoke with interest.
Matthew looked at him with a serious and interested expression on his face ‘You know that broken artifact we believed to be an alien generator that we found in Glasgow?’
The Colonel looked at him now confused he was wondering where the hell he was going with this ‘yes’
‘Well this is the real deal’ space travel is just the beginning, what about alien life he wondered, pondering the thought he nearly completely lost focus on what the colonel was saying.
The colonel knew however that Matthew was deep in his own world and brought him back to reality with a small bark ‘Matthew.’
Matthew nearly jumped out of his skin ’sorry sir, what did you say?’
‘I said, what does that mean for us?’ the annoyance at repeating himself quite clear in his voice, the colonel was not a man to repeat himself over again, instead he said something and liked an easy response.
‘Well the device could be studied and I think we can find out how it works, also if we modified our scanners we an pick up traces of this new metal and can find items lying about in the ground and dig them up’ the excitement was almost over whelming.
‘Very well’ the colonel said trying to keep himself from showing the extreme excitement he could feel ‘I’ll get someone right away.’
Major Cambell was not used to people barging into his lab so when he was told he was going to work on something highly classified it was the only thing that stopped him throwing a temper right there and then, an army personnel stood at the door with a stern expression, he came into the room with two other men and immediately saluted, this gained him rapid respect from the major, he was then nearly offered a drink when he said colonel Jones had sent him.
Before Major Cambell knew it he was in a car heading off to a location close to Aberdeen in Scotland and was then shown a way into a make shift lab where he met lots of very smart scientists waiting for his instructions. Being an expert in anything that required engineering skills and the most “brainy” person in the British army he was immediately put on to the project of finding out a way to harness the power of the device.
Colonel Jones was in charge of this operation and personally knew major Cambell from some previous mission, being a good friend of his he thought of the major straight away when Matthew suggested studying the device. Eighteen months later Major Cambell and his team were done, they had successfully figured out not only how the device worked and what it did but an effective way to reproduce the technology.
Colonel Jones was in the briefing room with Matthew and Major Cambell whilst he was going over some plans. The expression on his face couldn’t be mistaken for anything else other than pure confusion ’so let me get this straight, this thing is some kind of spaceship engine that folds space or something like that which will allow us fast travel between worlds?’ Just how can that be possible? Surely this meant interstellar capability?
Major Cambell was simmering the best way to put it to him so he could understand, he grabbed a sheet of paper ‘Se if I put my finger on this side of the A4 sheet and measure across the distance from one side to the other is 295mm, how ever if I fold the paper so that the two edges meet, it is now less than 1mm. This is basically the same as the generator, the distance between us and another planet or star maybe a certain distance but if we fold the space over then the distance is made much shorter.’
Colonel Jones finally understood ‘I see, I shall report this to General Sir Johnson and see what he says.’ And with that they were all payed and went back to doing their normal desk jobs.
However soon Major Cambell got a phone call about another classified project and after three years Colonel Jones, Major Cambell, and Dr Davis were all back in a briefing room with General Sir Johnson at the head. The surprise on Colonel Jones’s face was extreme ‘So let me get this straight General’ Colonel Jones addressed him, ‘You have built a spaceship using item we have found and now you want us to go on this spaceship on a mission to a newly discovered blip on deep space radar which you believe to be another planet that could be habitable?’
General Johnson looked at him with a stern, blunt face ‘Yes, thats exactly what I want you to do.’ he explained.
‘Any idea who’ll be captain or whatever of this thing?’ he said in an interested tone. Wonder if it will be some annoying crabby guy who seeks to control everything around him.
Again the Generals face was blank ‘Me’ that’ll shock him and guarantee him coming along as well.
‘I see, and what’ll we do?’
‘Colonel, I want you to pick two more personnel and lead a group with you in charge and Major Cambell and Dr Davis in it.’
‘Nice!’ My own team, plus we all know each other so just get two more of the guys that we know and we’ll have a right old time!
‘Dismissed and get yourselves to our airbase in north Scotland by Aberdeen, you’ve all got top level clearance on a highly classified mission.’
The Colonel looked at him for a minute, there’s no airbase at Aberdeen, is there? ‘Sir I don’t recall any knowledge of an airbase in that location.’
The General stared at him ‘That’s because it’s new and classified.’
Two months later everything was prepared and they jumped to the coordinates they had received from deep space, there was a massive vibration like an earthquake and sirens were sounding everywhere. A bridge personnel yelled out ‘Sir, primary systems are failing’ The look of worry on his face, ‘Engines are down, we’re stranded sir with no way back to Earth!
