Elderly man dies.

The need for proper facilities to house dementia sufferers became even more evident in Winnipeg this week.

An 87-year-old resident in a special care home has died after hitting his head in a recent fall.

But the fall was not your typical senior citizen trip or fall out of bed…the man was critically injured after he was pushed by a 70-year-old fellow care-home resident and dementia sufferer.

The deceased gentleman’s family is having difficulty in accepting the death and are seeking counsel of a lawyer.

The 70-year-old man, in the meantime is being held in the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

But this is not his first time that his dementia has resulted in him spending time in the remand centre. Last fall, he attacked and injured his wife and spent a month in remand before being released into the care of his family and subsequently into the special care home.

Police are contemplating charges in the assault and subsequent death of the senior senior.

This is such a sad case. It does happen. My son worked with Dementia cases in a care home and was attacked several times himself and had to break up scuffles between these people on several occasions. I don’t know what can be done about it. A very interesting post, Jimbob.

Oh… what a pity. They need to help these people more. Both the sufferers and carers.

    Good you are raising awareness.

I imagine we can thank cut backs for a situation which may have been prevented by more staff and more secure facilities. The Remand Center is no place for a person suffering from dementia either; they are not equipped to care for him there I am sure. It is a sad situation all around.

This is such a sad case. This story reminds me of my grandmother during her final moments, we had to place her in a nursing home and she fell out of bed and hit her head. My family wanted to sue because it was negligence from the center’s part, but we never did. Falling out of bed is terrible

This is very well-presented and I voted that I like it.

What an unfortunate death, such a shame. My grandad had dementia its awful I feel sorry for the families. In a twisted way the Dementia sufferes are not aware of their surroundings most of the time let alone the consequences of their actions! Great article. LB

Thanks for the article. I have heard of dementia, but have not known anyone personally who has suffered from it. It seems like it would be scary for the person who has it. I just can’t imagine waking up every day not knowing what world you’d be in, not recognizing what is going on or the people.
Also, the elderly so often do not get the respect they deserve. In this fast-paced society, people just don’t want to take responsibility many times for the elderly. It’s almost like… unless you are a benefit to someone and in their face, you are set aside as trivial in importance.
Then there are the people who just have no patience with a person who is not in charge of their own mind.

My father suffers from dementia now – he was a very kind person and it is sad to see him like that. I cant see that the police could hold anything against the 70-year old since he himself needs help.
