Zeus, the King of Gods, had a sister named Demeter. She was the goddess of harvest. When she got upse,t the crops died, so everyone tried to keep her happy.

What Demeter enjoyed most was spending time with her daughter, Persephone.

Persephone was very pretty. One day she was in the fields, and Hades, God of the Underworld, saw her and fell in love. He kidnapped her to the underworld.

In the home of Hades, Persephone was upset and cried all the time. She wouldn’t talk or eat. If you ate something in the Underworld, you could never leave.

But eventually Persephone became too hungry and ate six pomegranate seeds.

Back on earth, the crops were dying because Demeter was so sad. Zeus sent Hermes, a messanger, to Hades.

Hermes made a deal with Hades. Since Persephone ate six pomegranate seeds, she would marry Hades and live as Queen of the Underworld for six months each year.

Then in the Spring, Persephone would live six months on earth, with Demeter.

Everyoen agreed, and that’s why in Spring, Demeter makes the flowers bloom to welcome Persephone, and in fall, the crops die because Demeter is sad to say good bye ot Persephone.
