Looking over the Tucson desert from the mountain she’d climbed sat June Plumberg.
Jess had never told June that his feelings were still there for her. He longed to have her in his arms and keep her safe. Knowing he could do a better job than Mike had been doing. He couldn’t take the chance of ruining their friendship though.
When would June ever find out about Mike? He wouldn’t be the one to tell her that was for sure; she’d have to find out on her own.
Jess got home and went into his living room and turned on the TV. Getting up to get a beer he watched the hockey game and tried to put June out of his mind. But like telepathy the phone rang, he knew who it was.
“Hey Jess, glad you got home ok.” June said.
“You knew I would! Why do you worry so much?” Jess smiled as he answered.
“Because you’re my best friend and I want to make sure your ok.”
“I’m just fine Jess. Did you get home ok?”
“Sure.”
“Well than spend some time with Mike.”
“He’s not home yet. He left a message that he was working until 11 o’clock tonight. Jess he works too hard.”
“He’s young he can handle it, don’t worry too much.”
“Ok, I’ll try. Too bad I hadn’t known before we could have gone out to eat.”
“Maybe tomorrow.” Jess told her as he pictured her there all alone.
“Sounds good Jess. Hey you don’t mind if I call you again later do you?”
“June you can call me anytime you want to.” Jess told her.
“Thanks Jess. Goodbye.”
“Bye June.” Jess had wanted to say he loved her. But the phone connection cut off before he could.
Why did Mike always leave her at home? Jess knew Mike loved being a doctor and he was a hell of a good one. Mike had saved Jess’s mother last month, it was a miracle what he had done. Jess would always appreciate that.
