As Joe becomes infatuated with the new girl in school, his mind becomes so preoccupied with thoughts of this girl that his dreams begin to take over his reality. (1st in the series of Joe’s stories)
I woke one morning to realize that my reality didn’t stand as straight as it should. My dreams were becoming so real that I no longer knew if certain ones were really dreams or actual days in my incredibly boring life. Some people would think this was no big deal. Why don’t I ask other people whether something had really happened or not? Yeah, right. That only works a couple times before people start saying you should see a shrink. So, what happens when you can’t ask people about whether your dreams are real or not?
Like I said before, my senior year of high school had been pretty boring… at first, anyway. My old girlfriend had dumped me a month ago and was acting all weird around me whenever we ran into each other. The whole “let’s be friends” thing wasn’t working out. I wasn’t depressed or anything over it, but it seemed like Dee was, which made me feel bad. I didn’t like the weirdness, so I didn’t hang with her much. And since I no longer hung out with Dee all the time (like a good boyfriend should) I had to find a new way of entertaining myself.
And here came this new girl – Iris. I hadn’t noticed her until the second month of school because I was hanging with my boys most days. Laughing, going to movies, and just hangin’ with the guys was a good distraction from my otherwise dull and uncomfortable days.
So, eventually I bumped into Iris at the water fountain in between class one day. And what a relief that was since there wasn’t any weirdness at all, despite the messy intro. And, I haven’t been able to get her out of my mind since.
I was just running down the hall when WHAM! Smacked right into Iris’ side while turning the corner.
“Oh, Jeez! I’m sorry! You okay?” I asked, looking at the water splashed all over her beautiful face. And no, she wasn’t wearing a white shirt, so get your mind out the gutter.
‘I’m fine,” she said with the prettiest smile I’d ever seen. She wiped her wet brown hair off of her face as she asked playfully, “Where were you going in such a hurry, young man?”
“Oh, I was just chasing after my friend; he had my calculator.”
“Maybe you should go after him before you lose him. I don’t want you to lose your calculator on account of me.” I swear she batted her big green eyes at me while she talked.
