This is a short story about a boy who struggles to keep things on track.
Someday, I would like to be just like my dad. Well, I would like to have a football career like his at least. My dad was the most renowned football player of all time. There was no question that he was the most excellent running back ever. Although he had a great football career, outside of that, he trashed his own life, and some others. He got deep into drinking, forcing my mom and I to move out. We now live in the slums of New York. It is not the best house, but it is a reliable shelter. My mom and I love each other and that’s what gets us by.
I go to a bad high school. Mostly everyone carries either a gun or a knife. They lark around, looking for a fight. I know it stinks, but I should feel lucky to even be alive. Our school has a football team. You would think that we aren’t very good, but we are one of the top ten in the state. Right now, I am on the varsity team. I play second string running back. I am a sophomore, and if I want the shot at a scholarship from an elite college, I need to secure the starting position this year. I go to practice every day, I play my heart out every day, and securing the starting running back position is not looking too good for me, but I know how I can get better. I could use steroids. I have been thinking about using steroids since my freshman year, but now seems to be the time to start using them. What’s the worst that could happen? In high school, they don’t test for steroids anyway, and I could pick them up at the gym. If I pick them up and start using them today, I could have them building muscle by our game on Friday and I could start. I’ll go for it. I go to the gym and talked to the biggest weightlifter. It was obvious he used steroids, so I figured I would talk to him about it. The steroids are expensive, but I am willing to pay the money to walk like a winner.
