A short story with an intriguing Droste effect.

The assassin unhitched his binoculars from his belt and raised it to eye level. No one had left or entered the building where the target was suspected to be. He sighed and shifted his legs. Suddenly, the building exploded, and a figure emerged from the smoke and rubble.

He zoomed in with his electronic high-tech binoculars. He looked at the photo he had been given. It was the target. The assassin put down his binoculars and lifted his sniper.

“This,” he said aloud to himself, “Will pay for my credit card debt.” He smiled. The thought of Jorge giving him a black case of money clouded his mind. He stared off into the distance, and then, realizing he was letting the time slip away, snapped back into reality.

He peered through the scope of the sniper. The target had almost reached his car. He aimed it at the target with remarkable precision. He grinned, and then pulled the trigger.

Jorge approached the assassin, “You get him, Mark?”

“I never fail,” Mark replied.

“Verification?” Jorge inquired.

Mark slapped a photo album on Jorge’s desk. As Jorge sifted through the pictures, Mark grinned madly.

Jorge finally looked up, “Alright, then, my end of the deal,” He handed Mark a black vinyl case.

Mark eagerly snatched it from Jorge’s outstretched hand.

“See ya!”He said as he bolted for the bathroom.

Mark ran into the stall and locked the door.

His hands slipped over the onyx hard shell that sealed in his fortune. He grasped the silver, slippery lock and he fumbled for the key. The key jingled as he yanked it out of his pocket. He inserted the key and turned it. The lid clicked. He yanked the case open.

The building exploded into flames. Jorge smiled as he walked to his Lexus. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pang in his heart, and a pool of blood formed on his shirt. Jorge swayed and faltered, and then collapsed onto the floor in a lake of crimson blood.

The assassin smiled, “Bobby better pay me good. After all I got credit card debt.”
