A story about two ducks, Harold and Millicent.

Harold and Millicent are out for their morning swim. It is a beautiful late spring morning and the sun is shining. The attractive couple decide to greet their neighbors and anyone else they see swimming by:

“Harold!” calls Millicent. “That’s not a neighbor you just greeted, that’s a stick of wood in the pond!”

“Oh, is it? Terribly sorry. Millicent, you know I can’t see well without my glasses. Ah, the morning air does wonders for my rheumatism. Hey, it looks like there are some humans coming out. I wonder if they live someone else nearby? I always see different ones each day.”

“Harold, are you all right? Of course those are different people each day. We live in a preserve and there are hiking paths all around us.”

“Oh, are we? Sometimes I forget where we live, my dear.”

“I shouldn’t be surprised. Look how old you are getting! You’re turned six years old last May. Maybe you should go see a doctor.”

“Oh, I am all right, my dear. Look, we’re getting closer to the bridge. Maybe we can get some breakfast from the nice people watching us.” Harold swims closer to the bridge:

Millicent briefly shook her head. “Harold, they’re not allowed to feed us. There are signs all around the preserve saying “Do not feed the animals” .” She notices a small human leaning over the bridge’s railing and tossing some bread into the water. Harold responds:

“Really? Tell that to this small human tossing us some breakfast.” Harold gratefully gobbles up some bread that fell into the water. Harold looked up at the small human boy and smiled. Millicent gave in and decided to accept the free offering from the four year old child. He’s probably too young to read those signs around the preserve, she thought to herself. She ate breakfast with her husband and continued to watch the people come and go.

“Come on, Harold, let’s go to another part of the pond. Maybe we can catch some of our duck neighbors in a game of water polo.

“Excellent idea, Millicent.” Harold followed behind his wife to another part of the pond away from the humans.

Harold and Millicent enjoyed the rest of their day playing water polo with their neighbors before they all enjoyed a fish hunt together before returning to their roost for sleeping.
