Love does not know gender.
That corner of the library was never used. The books on the shelves had collected dust for years, centuries some said. The dust mites swirled in the few rays of sunlight that could be found there and the whispers of the other students couldn’t penetrate the tall bookcases. It was the perfect place to meet if you wanted it to be a secret. And they wanted it to be a secret.
“Molly?” A girl with stick-straight brunette hair walked quietly into the secluded corner and peered through the semi-darkness. She seemed to be searching for something or someone. After a minute of squinting through the gloom, she sighed quietly and sat down softly on a old lumpy arm chair.
“Hi, Franki,” said a voice, followed by its speaker, a girl with beautiful red hair and bright brown eyes.
“Where were you?! I was worried. Usually, I’m the one who’s late,” Franki whispered. Her hazel eyes met Molly’s and the two smiled at one another. Franki wrapped Molly in her arms and kissed her nose lightly. Molly felt her heart flutter at their closeness.
“I’m sorry. I got caught up with my cousins per usual. You would know how crazy Lily is with Sam. You’re her best friend, after all. But moving on…I’ve missed you,” Molly said quietly, her words muffled because she was pressing her face into the crook of Franki’s neck. Molly inhaled Franki’s strawberry shampoo and lilac perfume, drinking in the scent of the most beautiful girl she had ever known.
“I’ve missed you, too. You’d think living in the same dorm that we’d see more of each other,” Franki sighed. She held Molly tightly to her, as if she was afraid to release her.
“It’s too hard keeping this a secret. No one would even care, really, if we told them. We should, Franki. We should tell them.” She made to pull away from her girlfriend, but the brunette held her more tightly.
“I’m not ready. Soon, though. For now can we just be together?” Molly nodded.
“All right. Soon.”
“I promise you.” Franki pulled Molly into her lap as she collapsed back into the arm chair.
“I –”
“Let’s not talk, okay? I haven’t kissed you in twenty two hours and fourteen minutes. I’ve waited long enough,” and with those words her lips crashed onto Molly’s.
Molly pulled put of the kiss and flipped herself so she was straddling Franki, her legs placed in the spaces between the chair’s arms and Franki’s hips. The red-head smashed her lips back onto the brunette’s in a sort of fiery, feral passion that not many relationships could boast. Maybe it was the thrill of secrecy, maybe it was that they hadn’t kissed in what seemed to be ages, maybe it was just the way they were. It didn’t matter why they kissed with a raging desire. It only mattered that they embraced the exploding passion between them at all.
Franki pulled Molly to her roughly. They were practically horizontal on the chair. Their tongues danced intricately, creating silent moans for the girls to share. They each tasted peppermint and chocolate, their only vices besides one another. Franki chewed peppermint gum like her life depended upon it and Molly always had chocolate. They only cared about their obsessive love when they with one another and the tastes on their tongues were the only indication of a world beyond them.
They broke apart slowly, needing oxygen before one of them passed out. Their lips glistened in the dim light.
“I love you, Franki,” Molly purred quietly.
“I love you more,” Franki whispered back with earnest. She grasped Molly’s hand tightly in her own and pulled the other girl to her feet as she rose from their shared arm chair. “I’m ready.”
“What?” Molly’s voice seemed to rise in her apparent surprise.
“I said ‘I’m ready’,” Franki repeated. “I’m ready to tell our families. I’m ready to tell the world just how much I love you.” Molly embraced her again and after a swift kiss, in which their lips barely brushed, the girls headed for their dorm to finally tell their families the truth.
