Short story about a shorter relationship.

Having the urge to write I decided I was going to write about my father. Notice I said “was”.

My dad, Earl, is 92years old. He wouldn’t agree that he is nearly totally blind or a shade short of deaf. Contrarily he would argue that he can see enough to get by and he can hear the car…just before it hits him. The proof being that he takes walks every day and has only been hit by cars three times.

Yesterday dad took a walk a short distance from where he lives with my sister. On this walk and I believe on a park bench, he met a woman. Percy is 90 years old. They walked the entire perimeter of the lake and in the end Percy gave Earl her address and phone number. She said she would love to hear his stories and he should come visit her.

My dad has stories that beget stories that in turn, beget stories. There may be a few I haven’t heard but I wouldn’t put money on it.

So when my sister told me of this encounter between Earl and Percy I thought this would be a great story. I had visions of them both sharing their life experiences and finding relief because someone, finally, wanted to listen and cared to listen.

I’m not writing this story now because Dad has decided that he doesn’t want to get involved with another woman. That’s today. Tomorrow may be a different story. After all, Earl is 92 years old.
