Short story about a little bunny that, as his name implies, is a bit of a slacker and is more interested in having fun than going to school. What will happen to him this time? Does he learn his lesson?
“What a beautiful day!” thought Easy Bunny out loud, one middle of the morning, springtime day. As he sat against a tree, paws together behind his head and crossing his legs into a four, he took a deep breath of the fresh spring morning air. “What a day for doing nothing, nothing to do but relax and enjoy being alive.” He began to hum, like the bees do, only bunny style.
Everything was fine with Easy Bunny this day until….his stomach began to rumble and make funny noises. He sat up and sniffed the air with his twitching little pink nose. Was that fresh carrot pie he smelled in the fresh spring air? His ears pointed up like TV antennas as if maybe he could hear where the pie was. If only it would say “Here I am!” But it didn’t. It only smelled good. Real good! He stood up and hopped to the big oak tree about ten hops from his tree.
Mrs. Working Woodpecker was busy high up in that tree. Peck- peck-peck. Some little wood chips fell on Easy Bunny.
“Hey! Take it easy will you lady. You’re getting wood junk all over my nice clean fur!” yelled Easy Bunny as he looked up and saw Mrs. Working Woodpecker pecking on the oak tree.
Mrs. Working Woodpecker stopped pecking, straightened her glasses and looked down with one wing covering her eyes from the sun. “Young bunny, this is my job. I am working hard to get food for my little ones and I don’t remember you being there when I started work this morning.” she said. “Anyway, aren’t you supposed to be in school today?” she asked.
“Too nice a day to go to school and just sit there,” Easy Bunny said. “Besides, I’m looking for a fresh carrot pie that I smelled. Can you see it from up there?” he asked.
“Fresh carrot pie indeed!” Mrs. Working Woodpecker said. “All I see is wood and leaves and bugs. Now please go away. I have much work to do before sundown.” And with that she began pecking at the tree again, her glasses bouncing on her beak.
Easy Bunny frowned as he said to himself, “She doesn’t know what a nice day she’s wasting. I’ll find that pie all by myself and I’ll eat it all by myself too.” He hopped up a small hill from where the carrot pie smell grew stronger as he reached the top. He looked down the other side of the hill. A little pink house with a chimney of red bricks sat in the middle of a green meadow with only one big Elm tree near its kitchen window. His sharp eyes could see three little circles on the window sill. The carrot pie! Three of them? Carrot pies!
