If you have ever been frustrated by the lack of service in service departments this story is for you.

My passenger window exploded – shattered and dissolved into tiny bits of safety glass. I was on a secondary paved highway with bush on both sides of the road and not another car in sight. I thought I had been shot and realized I should have ducked. Then I realized that by the time I heard the glass shatter it would have been too late to duck.
I mentally took stock of my shoulder and satisfied myself that I wasn’t bleeding. Then I acknowledged that if I had been shot and the bullet had missed me it would have broken the other window. At that point I pulled over.

There was no discernable reason for my window to have shattered. It was a bright sunny morning, around 7:20. There were no houses nearby. No kids playing. No construction underway. The road on my right, on my passenger side, rose gently into bush covered hills. It seemed unlikely that a bird would have flown downhill at sufficient speed to break my window. Truly a mystery – but I was okay and the car was okay – except for the broken window.

I was on my way to work and had a busy day ahead of me. I was leaving the next for a business trip to Toronto. This was not good timing. But all in all I figured it would work out. I would drop off my car, they wouldn’t be able to fix it today but they would likely offer me a loaner car – wouldn’t they? And if not I could rent a car since it was a business trip. Save the miles on my car – could be a good thing.

I called ahead and told the dealership what had happened and they told me to bring in the car and promised to get me to work for 8:30.
When I arrived at the dealership the counter person told me not to worry. The service department would put a piece of cardboard or something in the window until they could replace the glass.

Now hang on a minute here. I could have taped some contraption over the window to keep out the wind if that was the issue.
“No, no – that is not an option.” I explained. “I have to go to Toronto tomorrow and I am not driving around Toronto with cardboard or plastic or any other such stuff on my window.”
“Well, they have to order the glass and they won’t have it in today. There is no way they can have it done for today.”
