Enkidu’s Dream.
I, Enkidu, see darkness. I can barely make out the forms of statues as my eyes gradually adjust to the light that wasn’t there. When I found my way to the winding, gloomy, staircase that showed me the way to the temple basement, I regrettably inched my way through the narrow crevice. At the bottom of the staircase there was a hole in the ground. I sprained my ankle when I stepped in the almost invisible hole. It hurt so bad I had to crawl through the wide, spider-web invested hallway that went on for eternity. I started to crawl slowly towards what I thought was the end of the tunnel but I was just another one of many stray tunnels that led into tombs of ancient beasts that were mercilessly slain by people like me. I saw a grave marker that said, “Here lays Enkidu, slayer of the precious Humbaba.” I couldn’t help the fact that everything I looked at reminded me of my horrible deed that led me to this horrible place of torture. I kept pressing on towards the room of spirits. I arrived. Upon entering the room he couldn’t resist pulling the shiny lever at the end of the room. It was the only light or shiny thing that he had seen for miles and miles. As soon as I pulled the lever, a wall opened and I crawled though. The air in the room was heavy and it smelled of pigs. This was the room where the lowest of lowest people went when they died. It was filled with hammers, and buckets with holes in them, and other various instruments that couldn’t be reached by the human hand. Suddenly, I heard a loud screeching noise. A spirit had followed me into the next room. This ghastly, pale, spirit with gnashing teeth and talons as sharp as a double-edged sword swung its claws at me without regret. I ducked just in time. I tried to fight back but I knew it was no use. The spirit retreated and charged again. I realized I had only made it angrier. The spirit swung at me again. Left talon. Right talon. Left talon. Left talon. The next thing I knew, I was sprawled out on the ground with a spirit standing over me. I looked up. His teeth were getting closer and closer to my helpless neck. With one quick strike I felt searing pain inch its way throughout my body. I tried to stand. I fell back to the ground with another swipe of the spirit’s claw to my ankles. I knew this was the end. I frantically tried to crawl out of the room. The spirit quickly flew over and blocked my path. My body was broken. My face was bloodied. The pain was unbearable. I couldn’t move. I lapsed in and out of consciousness. The next time I became conscious, I realized that it was all a vision of what was yet to come that was sent to me by the gods.
