My father came home pretty shook up. He said he hit a deer on the dirt road heading to our ranch. He said she had a tiny fawn. He gather the fawn up and put her in the cab of his pickup. Our horses were using the north pasture, so he put her in a small fence in area. It was close to my bedroom window and she would be safe there. She had the biggest brown eyes. She was so tiny. We set up a feeding bottels and took turn feeding her. At first Fawnhad trouble excepting the feedings. Soon she drank and she wasnt so nerveous. Fawn started gaining weight. Fawn would follow us around the yard and jump and play. Fawn like playing with the bucket we put corn in. We went out and filled one of the stalls with hay. I would lay down and talk softly to her. I told her that her name was fawn and one day she would grow into a fine doe. Fawnwould nuzzel close to me like she understood. As she grew she learned to kick a ball. I guess she saw my brother playing ball with his friends. Fawn surprise me one day kicking the ball my way. I told my dad when he came home from getting feed for the animals. He just laugh at me and said i was seeing things. He laughed at me. I brought him outside so he could see. I tried to get fawn to kick the ball but she just followed me. Just like you to make a liar out of me, i laughed as i went inside. Hunting season was only days away and i was pretty upset. Dad just said calm down she is safe. You could here the guns nearby. So many hunters this year. I don’t have anything against hunting for food but to shoot and leave the deer where it fell was something i hated. The gunfire made fawn so nervous. Fawn would bang into the fence trying to get away from the noise. I put Fawn in the barn and locked the stall doors. She soon calmed down. Fawn was turning into a fine doe. She had good muscle tone. Fawn was a camera hog when it came to taking pictures. Mom and dad would laugh as she came close to the camera. Fawn would chase Rocky, our lab from the yard. She wanted full attention. The weekend came when dad told me to sit and that he wanted to talk to me. I thought he wanted to talk about summer vacation coming up. He said Fawn was a wild animal and it was time to let her join the other deer. He wanted to take her to Fort Clark where she would be safe. Fawn would be with all the deer and there was no hunting there. We could see her when we went to town. I couldn’t help it, i cried at the thought of losing her. He explained that Fawn would be better off there. Iknew he was right, but the little girl in me didn’t want to loose her. We would release her into the wild this Sunday. I spent all night with Fawn in the barn talking to her and telling her she would be safe. Ithought i saw a tear in her eyes, but maybe i was imagining it. Ilike the thought that she would miss me too. Sundaycame and we headed to Fort Clark. He let Fawn out near the river. There was about five does there about her size. We watch as they approach her as they all seem to get along. She ran toward the woods with them. Goodbye Fawn i yelled. About two weeks went by and we were riding around Fort Clark. We saw her and when we stopped on the side of the road she came up to us. Fawn looked good. she stayed a few minutes then she sprang off. Fawn looked so happy. We went back many times to visit her. Then one year she wasn’t seen anymore. she was quite old the last time we saw her. we hope Fawn is happyin heaven with Fields of grain. One day we will see her again in heaven.
