FOOTY FINALS (AFL)
It was a close and tough game, kicking goals at both ends. The score was 24 to 28. We were up by 4 points but still it was early days yet. The coach was happy with the performance but said he wants to see second efforts to the ball. The siren had gone for the second quarter. The ball bounced once again. We won the tap and got a goal straight away. It was a good start. It was a great second quarter everyone was on their best performance. The second quarter had ended and we were up by two goals. The scores were 32 to 44. The coach was happy with the performance and said, “just keep doing what you are doing”. The siren had gone for the third quarter.
The ball bounced and went the other way. And the other team got the leading goal of the third quarter. The team kept their heads up. The ball bounced again and we got the ball. One of the players kept running from centre all the way to the forward line. He was flying! Suddenly he had two guys on his tail he kicked the ball straight towards goal and craaakkkkkkk!
He got smashed to the ground screaming in so much pain. It was one of our best players. He was out for the game and things were not looking good. The other team were dominating and ended up winning on the scoreboard by 20 points at the end of the third quarter. The team started to drop their heads in doubt of winning. The third quarter had ended. The score was 70 to 50. The coach was furious as we had slackened off in the third quarter. But we started to lift our heads as the team was encouraging each other and everyone was ready to finish off the game. The siren had sounded for the fourth and final quarter. The ball bounced and bang! There I was with the ball and I kicked a goal. We were not giving up this easy. The game kept going and as they kicked one, we kicked about three. We were down by five and with about 2 minutes to go I had got pushed to the forward line. The ball bounced, we got the ball running quickly to the forward line. They ran in looking for targets but kicked wide with me diving with a screamer of a mark.
The siren had gone and I was lined up for goal on the tightest angle. I was so nervous. In my mind I was saying, why is this me? The team started to encourage me. I went for the shot it came off my boot, swinging around and around slowly moving, and then it went in the goal! The crowd cheered loudly. My team picked me up and cheered. It was the happiest moment of my life. Our team got the trophy and we had won the premiership. This was not an individual effort but this was a team effort and team work always works better than individual.
