A character study of a boy named Geraldo Pocca. Find out what he is like and what adventures await him.
Geraldo Pocca walked into St. Luke’s Retirement Center at about two o’clock on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. He heard short black hair, sparkling blue eyes, and was 15 years old. In his hands were two medium-sized boxes for some retired friends of his. Every Saturday he came to St. Luke’s and hung out with his grandpa and his grandpa’s war friends. He loved to hear the tales of how the men were shot and the recollections of the war. Geraldo walked over to the reception desk and set down his two boxes to take a short break.
“Hey Geraldo! What have you got for me today?” called Mrs. Johanson, St. Luke’s receptionist.
“Well let’s see Mrs. Johanson,” responded Geraldo. Geraldo picked up his first box and opened the flaps. “How about a dozen vanilla-iced cookies with jimmies?” asked Geraldo.
“Ohhh boy you know how much I love vanilla!” squealed Mrs. Johanson.
“Well it’s all yours Mrs. Johanson,” said Geraldo as he handed the box of cookies to her over the counter. He started to walk away but he suddenly remembered. “Say, have you seen my grandpa around lately?” asked Geraldo.
“Why yes I have Geraldo. About fifteen minutes ago I saw him heading towards the pool area.” Answered Mrs. Johanson.
“Thank you!” yelped Geraldo as he turned and headed down the hallway. As Geraldo walked towards the pool area he thought back to the smile on Mrs. Johanson’s face as he gave her the cookies. He loved to bring joy to those around him and brighten up their day. This was the main reason he brought cookies and sweets to the members of St. Luke’s every Saturday.
“Hey Sonny Boy!” yelled Ol’ Grandpa Pocca, disrupting Geraldo’s train of thought.
“Grandpa!” yelled Geraldo. He ran towards him then quickly slowed up when he saw what his grandpa was wearing. “Why are you in that Speedo?!?!?” said Geraldo in disgust.
“Well little buddy lets keep this between you and me but it attracts the ladies,” he said with a wink.
“Grandpa I think I might barf,” stated Geraldo. Ever since his grandma had died three years, his grandpa had done everything he could to get a lady. Although personally he though people that old shouldn’t be dating he was happy for his grandpa.
“Well, Geraldo I have to get going soon, because its bingo day today and the big tournament is starting soon. Yet before I go do you have anything sweet for me?” he asked.
“Of course Grandpa; are you in the mood for something sweet or sour?” asked Geraldo.
“Well I think today I’ve got quite the sweet tooth sonny so what do you got for me?” he asked eagerly.
“My mom’s famous brownies baked to perfection Grandpa,” said Geraldo. Geraldo opened up his second box and pulled out a bag of piping hot brownies and handed them to his grandpa. He hugged his grandpa goodbye then turned to leave. He paused, turned back around and elbowed his grandpa gently. “Oh and Grandpa, between you and me, that lady over there has been looking out you the whole time I’ve been here,” hinted Geraldo, then he turned and left, but not before he saw the huge grin on his grandpa’s face. As he walked away he chuckled to himself and thought happily that even though it was done in the weirdest manner possible, he had brightened his Grandpa’s day once again.
