A Ghost Story for Halloween — Happy Halloween!
“Great,” Yvonne muttered as she sat down at an old desk. Outside she could hear the rain starting to fall that increased in intensity as the wind blew harder and harder.
Well, someone will have to check on this room sooner or later, she thought. Someone will see my book bag.
After the storm had passed and the moon shone through a break in the clouds and moonlight spilled in through a window illuminating part of the room while throwing shadows against the wall. She started feeling cold; her flimsy jacket barely kept her warm.
By now she hoped that someone noticed that she had not been at the dinner in Lawson Hall and never made it to the Ghost Party. And even if no one had noticed that she wasn’t at either one of these places, when her roommate came back to the room she would have to notice that Yvonne was not in her bed. And if she did notice she would notify the proper authorities and then it would be only a matter of time before they would….
That’s when Yvonne remembered that her roommate was spending the night with her boyfriend. There would be no proper authorities looking for her, at least not until morning.
Well, if I am going to be here for awhile, I might as well do something to pass the time, she thought. She noticed what appeared to be a full length mirror at the far end of the room as well as an old blanket. She kicked her shoes off and sat down on the blanket in the lotus position in front of the mirror. She did a variety of yoga positions which made her feel better not to mention a little sleepy.
Someone will be here soon, she thought and after awhile she dozed off.
She was awakened by voices and what sounded like her roommate yelling her name. Someone pounded on the door and then it flew open. Standing near the doorway were two campus security officers, her roommate Michelle, best friend Jeri, and some university officials.
“She’s in here,” Michelle said rushing toward Yvonne and putting her arms around her. “We were so worried about you when you didn’t come back home last night and didn’t show up at the party.”
Someone flipped on the light inside of the room. Yvonne looked at the clock on the wall. It was 5:00am.
“You really scared us,” Jeri said. “Someone said they had seen you coming here in the afternoon, and we thought….”
“It’s okay, it’s okay,” Yvonne said. “I came in here because I thought Professor Mueller was inside and then the wind blew the door shut.”
Yvonne felt a little embarrassed now that so many people had come to her rescue. When everyone could see that she was all right, they left except for the building custodian who stayed behind to lock up.
“So, what did you do last night, I mean to pass the time?” Michelle asked. “Were you scared?”
“A little,” Yvonne said, “but to pass the time, I sat down on a blanket in front of the mirror in the room and worked on a couple of my yoga moves and positions. I guess that’s when I fell asleep.”
Michelle and Jeri looked at one another with a shocked look on their faces.
“Did you say sat down in front of a mirror?” Jeri asked.
Yvonne nodded.
“To work on some yoga moves to pass the time?” Michelle asked.
“That’s right,” Yvonne said. “Why, what’s wrong?
“Yvonne, there’s no mirror in this room,” Michelle said.
