Jenny went up into the attic and found a hat. She loved it so much that she begged her granny to lent it to her when she was going with Peter to his brother’s wedding. Jenny looked a picture. Jenny and Peter were so busy with their exams. When the exams were finished Peter took Jenny to a restaurant and proposed. They got married and had children.

Years later Jenny’s and Peter’s granddaughter found the hat in their attic.

“Jenny, where are you?”

“I am in the attic.”

“I told you not to go up there and nose about, Jenny, please come down . You know I don’t like it, please come down and leave things alone. They are all personal things., please, come down.” Granny became more and more irritable.

“Alright, Granny, I am coming down. It is so interesting. You have so many lovely things up here. I just love it.”

Jenny came down and brought a lovely, big straw hat with her.

“Oh Jenny, I wish you wouldn’t do these sort of things. Why did you bring this hat down with you? please take it back straightaway.”

“Granny, this hat is absolutely beautiful. I look super in it. It really suits me.”

“Yes, it does suit you. Your Granddad will get a shock when he sees you with it. I still remember when he bought it for me. We had to go to his boss’s garden party and it was quite a grand affair. I made myself a lovely dress. Your Granddad was so impressed with my dress, he went out and bought me that big straw hat. I know he spent quite a lot of money. I loved that hat the moment I saw it. When we went there, I looked such a picture that everybody stared at me. Your Granddad was so proud of me he felt ten feet tall. I always felt it was a lucky hat. It does something for you. We really enjoyed that garden party. We couldn’t believe it. We were amongst people like that. Even though we weren’t at that social level, they were very nice to us.

Granddad came in from the garden, and stopped, looking flabbergasted.

“Gosh, I thought it was you, Helen. It brought back so many memories. The lovely house, garden and that party. Your Granny looked so beautiful, Jenny. I fell in love with her all over again. But what are you doing with that hat? I don’t want it ruined.”

“No, Granddad, I won’t ruin it. I just want to borrow it. Peter’s brother is getting married and I am invited. I’ve bought myself a beautiful strawberry-pink dress and if I put the same coloured ribbon on the hat it would look lovely. It is the perfect hat to go with my dress. Please, Granddad?”

Granny and Granddad looked at each other. They didn’t really want Jenny to have the hat because of all the memories. Yet, Jenny stood there begging and pleading.
