The amazing story of what happened the night Harry Seavey passed away. It was on June 24, 1956 and it happened in a farm house in Harrington, Maine.
It had been a long road for Ms. Corris, she lived in a place called Harrington,Maine. She had loved her husband Harry very much. They had been Married since September 8th, 1921. Ms. Corris was in her kitchen with her granddaughter Marie and they were nibbling on biscuits and molasses (a common snack for the times). Harry was upstairs in their bedroom laying down. He had been very sick for quite some time. Harry in his younger days was quite the Man. A good father, all though he was very stern at times, a hard worker, he had been a woodsman/logger for the most of his years and he was a good husband. He had been battling throat cancer. It was a long road for him and at this point he was tired. Ms. Corris and her granddaughter knew the time was drawing near that night and they had been in the kitchen talking about it. As they ate their biscuits and molasses the house fell silent. They took a glance at each other and then something outside caught their attention. It was the summer of 1956 and the sky was clear, when out of nowhere a grand ball of fire came down from the sky and it landed in the field by the house. Every dog within a 2 mile radius began to howl a blood curdling howl. Marie, who was only nine years old at the time didn’t know what to think. Her eyes were the size of tea saucers and she could only look on with amazement. She knew by all rights she should be shaking in her shoes, but for some reason she felt at peace. She looked at her Grammy, and Ms. Corris looked back at her. Marie said “He’s gone isn’t he? Grampy is gone?” and Corris answered her “Yes Rea, Grampy is gone.”
Marie is my mother. This was based on her recollection of events from that day when she was only 9 years old, when her Grampy and my Great-Grampy passed away at the young age of only 63. Growing up this was one of my favorite stories to hear. My Mother has had very many unusual incidents or encounters in her life. I am thankful she chose to share them with me. Ms. Corris and Harry Seavey had 19 children in all. Each and every one of them I hold dear to my heart. I have not met all of them. Many had been gone long before I was ever born. But my favorite Grammy was one of Ms.Corris’ girls. My mother has told me about many other stories that may make my Triond article list at some point or another. Rest In Peace Harry and Corris Seavey.
