A previous short story contest that was to be about Humor: fiction, fathers day at the beach and a purple turtle. Had a lot of fun writing this and took third place in the contest. It was a wonderful surprise!
“What a beautiful day Joey. Thank you for thinking about me and planning the whole afternoon just for me” David says. “I’ve never been to the beach for Father’s Day before. This is special. You’re a good son, Joe.“
“Thanks Dad. But it’s just started. See all the balloons? Those are just for you. I made you lunch too” he says as he hands his dad a peanut butter and Jelly sandwich on a small napkin. “It’s your favorite, right Dad?” Joe asks anxiously.
“You bet Joe, you know me and my PBJ’s” David says as he takes a big bite and ends up with the grittiest peanut butter and jelly sandwich ever. How that much sand ended up in the sandwich is a mystery, but he went to so much trouble, David thinks, that there’s no way he’s going to complain about it.
“Wow Dad, you ate that fast, do you want another one?” Joe asks excitedly as he starts to reach for the brown paper bag sitting next to him.
“No, thanks Joe, I’m full. Beside, let’s play ball or something. We can save some for later. How about skipping rocks?” David asks quickly, not wanting to try to stomach another “sand” sandwich.
“YES!” Joe says as he jumps up and down, happy to have his Dad all to himself. “Race you to the water” Joe yells as he starts running, his little legs pumping like crazy as he feels the win, glancing back only once to make sure he’s way ahead.
“Where did you learn to run like that” David asks, pretending to be out of breath from the fast run.
