Flynn knew he’d just been hoodwinked but it was only for one night…what could possibly go wrong in just one night?

Flynn was 18, had just graduated from high school and was employed at the local Sears store as a mechanic in their service department. He lived at home, tried his best to stay out of trouble, although admittedly being a teenager it still often found him. Such was the case on this particular summer night…

His beloved grandmother was a resident of a local adult care home. The twosome adored each other and Flynn stopped in every chance he got for a visit. The now senile old lady had helped her daughter raise the young man after his father had abandoned them both shortly after the boy’s birth.

Flynn received a frantic phone call from the owner of the home late in the day asking if he’d be willing to come in and work the third shift in Kathy’s place because she’d just called in sick.

“What would I have to do?” He asked nervously.

“Well, not much really, the residents will all be in bed asleep. You’ll just need to keep an eye on them, make sure if any of them gets up that they don’t fall or wander outside, that kind of thing.” Mary was desperately hoping that the young man would agree to help her out because if he wouldn’t she would have to and she’d been up all day and she wasn’t a kid, anymore.

“Well, I don’t know, Mary…as much as I’d like to help out, I don’t know anything about taking care of old people.”

Mary wasn’t giving up that easily, however, she needed help and she would get it.

“Oh come on, Flynn! It’ll be fun! You’ll get to spend some extra time with your grandma!”

“Yeah, but she’ll be asleep…” He countered.

“Okay, that’s true enough…will you do it for her? So that she’ll be safe tonight while she sleeps?” It couldn’t hurt to play on his love for his grandma.

That did it. Flynn folded.

“Okay, I’ll do it…” He said at length.

“Great! Meet me here at 10:30 tonight and I’ll fill you in on the schedule, okay?”

Flynn had just been hoodwinked and he knew it but it was only for one night.

What could possibly go wrong in just one night? Everything would be fine…he was sure of it. He hoped, anyway…

For the young it is such a shock to see and hear these real life happenings for the elderly. Somehow it helps if you can understand that your kindness and caring of them is one of the few blessings they have. Thank You.

    Nick,
Great story! This happens quite often in nursing homes. Especially to people with dementia. Most of the time they’re living in the past, but occasionally visit the present for just a moment. Again, Great story Nick!!!

You scoundrel, for telling! Cute story and so realistic. We begin as babies and need to be cared for and leave the world almost the same.
