Hector Montoya went into the sea along with one of the greatest treasures ever lost. He emerged with a treasure greater than all that was sitting at the bottom of the sea.

Hector Montoya felt the Sea water the ever present salty wash that had surrounded him for two days he had been drifting between consciousness and death sure every time he closed his eyes it was for the last time and then the waves would toss him this way or that and he would still be alive.  Hector clung to a barrel that was filled with pickled fish.  He had thought it might be water or wine but when he finally got it open it was filled with briny pickled fish.  It was nice to have something to eat but what he needed most was water.  And the salty liquid had tasted no different than the ocean water that splashed against his lips torturing him constantly for two days.   In his exhausted state he hadn’t even realized that he had land beneath him.

3 days ago 33 treasure laden ships were on their way to Spain.  El Dorado the ship Hector was on board was extra heavy with gold.  The prize item on the ship was a one and a half ton solid gold table being offered as a gift to the king to show Bobadilla’s gratitude for making him governor.    Bobadilla himself was on board the ship and Hector was sure he was lost.  The hurricane had torn the ship to shreds the last time he saw Bobadilla he was fighting with a sailor who was trying to make off with a golden cross.  In the middle of the melee a second ship was thrown into the El Dorado lifted by a giant wave it cut the El Dorado in half.  Hector was in the sea from that moment until now.  There was no help, there was no rescue he heard no screams he only heard the wind and the sea as it devoured everything man holds dear.

Fascinating and well written story. You never know when good fortune will shine on you, and Hector took advantage of his good fortune. Well done Brad.

Very well written tale. You can tell it was written by a man as soon as I got to the line about her glancing at his pants I had to laugh.

Hehehe…off-kilter but funny Brad and a refreshing change from all your other instalments. Romantically speaking…it was kinda wham-bam but hey…at least they sailed away together with a fortune :-)

I always have preferred the condensed version. Why add a lot of extra filler, just tell the tale. Great job.

I resent the fact you used the name Maria, but I’ll let it slide. Great story, Bradford.

Lovely tale Brad – Reminds of the words from that song:”All the nice girls love a candle—”

Not bad, Sir, not bad at all. Any truth to this fairytale?

    Brad,
only you could get washed out by a hurrican, stumble up the beach into a bar and find a way to get laid. Another autobiographical piece my friend?
