Helmut Trout
(Salvelinus fontanels disambiguation phallus)
Also known as
(Cyclops Trout, One Eyed Trout or the Phallus Trout)
The Helmut Trout is believed Extirpated. A species that no longer exists in the wild in Ontario Canada but still may occur elsewhere, or Extinct. This subspecies of the Salvelinus fontanels or Brook Trout, like many other cave dwelling fish species evolved to have no eyes and no pigment in its skin except for a sensory node at the very front of the fish. This blue sensory node led to the names Cyclops Trout or One Eyed Trout. First identified by Helmut Grubber in 1703 he was quoted in saying “I call it a Helmut Trout after me and its head looks like a helmet.”
The last known specimen captured in the wild was in 1903 by Sister Wilhelmina Debauch. A Semitic Nun on sabbatical at the Convent of the Sisters of Saint Pudendum on the shores of Lake Coucuiching in Ontario Canada. The record size specimen weighed two pounds, was eighteen inches long and had a circumference of four inches. Reported in the Barry Adviser by Tomas Harbinger “When asked by this reporter how she caught the normally cave dwelling fish in open water, Sister Wilhelmina Debauch replied ” I was hungry and wading in the water when it just came to me.”"
The only known preserved specimen is on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D. C. The staff at the Smithsonian affectionately call the specimen after the 37th President of the United States Richard Nixon, or Tricky Dickey.
