A gift gone wrong.
‘I have something for you,’ he called, from the front door.
She heard the gentle whoosh the apartment door made as he walked inside.
‘Don’t forget to lock the door,’ she said, walking from the bedroom.
‘Okay, okay. Would you just come see? I want to make sure I got this right,’ he said.
‘What is it?’ she asked, slightly frustrated. Every time he said “I want to make sure I got this right,” it usually wound up being some useless gift that caught his eye on the walk home from work. Last time it was a potato peeler, masher thing that they never used and was still sitting in the box, in the cupboard.
She rounded the corner and nearly walked into him.
‘Oh, there you are,’ he said, his eyes shining with excitement.
‘The apartment isn’t that big… you had to wait right here?’ she said impatiently.
‘Well…’ his face started to fall, taking on a puppy dog look that he used often.
‘It’s been a long day. I’m sorry,’ she said sighing. Trying to sound more excited, she continued. “What did you bring home?”
‘I really hope you like these, I was hoping…’ his eyes got a mischievous smile to them.
She took the bag, which was marked with her favorite shoe store logo on it and walked to the couch. Plunking herself gracefully down, she placed the bag on her lap. She slid the box out and could feel herself getting excited. She loved this shoe store, time and time again she wished she could afford it, but her budget wouldn’t allow it. Lifting the lid, her eyes got huge. The excitement that was flowing through her was clearly visible as she began to bounce on the couch.
‘Harris!’ she screamed passionately.
‘Did I do well this time?’ he said smiling.
‘Oh my God, yes!’ she said, dropping the box to the floor and jumping to her feet. She wrapped her arms around him and kissed him hard on the lips.
‘Mmm,’ he muttered, when the kiss finally broke. “I”ll have to remember that for next time.’
‘They’re gorgeous, but honey…’ she looked at him confused. “There”s no way…’
‘Yes there is,’ he said, as he placed a finger over her lips. “You deserve a treat every now and then. Enjoy it.”
