A story about our four-footed friends and why we are compatible.

Long long ago, perhaps fifty milennia or more, man was a woods and cave dweller.  He walked or crawled to get anywhere.  His big problem was that when food ran out in any particular area where he lived, he had to go on foot with his family, even in terrible weather, to search for an area where food existed.

One day, Jon, a son of a caveman, wandering in the woods, found a small abandoned animal recently born.

It was weak but to Jon, beautiful, and he helped it to its feet, and saw that it had four long legs, the vestiges of a mane, two perky ears, and a long face with formidable teeth at the mouth.  The other end had a long silky brushy tail.  JON wondered if it would be good to eat, or at the least, he could have it as something to while away the time.  Once on its feet, the new friend started munching grass so Jon had an indication of what to feed the quadruped.  He led it back to the cave front, and formed a long string from lianas to tie it securely by the entrance.

His mother Ana came out and was excited by the appearance of this animal never before seen in their area.

Lee, the father, came back with a brace of turkeys he had gotten for dinner, and was pleased that Jon had been able to catch some food on the hoof so to speak.

But Jon named the animal E-O  (”ee-o”) and asked to keep it alive.  He was granted that wish.

‘  Jon fed EO every day or tied it where there was grass…soon the two had an understanding…EO liked Jon and Jon liked EO…EO grew swiftly into a much bigger animal, and soon JON, now in his teens, could stand by it and his head only went a little bit above EO’s back.

The two now went together to forage and Jon found that he could put a large amount of gathered wood or grain or skins full of nuts or ground foods upon the back of EO and bring them easier to the home cave.  By now, the very large cave had let a space at the front for EO to live, and Jon cleaned her droppings and urine spots out every day, and had a place inside where EO could eat when it was freezing or stormy.
