This is a short tale about one veteran who has to ride his Appaloosa mare into Albuquerque to make his appointment at the VA hospital. That is done because he has been laid off. He can’t afford to drive his old pickup into town. There is no other way to make it.

Horses Rule Relaxation
Horses rule relaxation. Mike Potts sat on his tall Appaloosa mare in the sand hills over looking the Rio Grande valley as the sun started falling in front of him. At least after getting laid off from that hazardous material hauling trucking company he drove for in Albuquerque he could still afford to feed his horse. Riding her up in the sand hills instead of sitting in the living room wishing the TV worked was a lot more relaxing than a VA hospital prescription or hitting some bar to get drunk. Shouldn’t Veterans Affairs pay disabled veterans some horse care allowance?
Horses Rule Motivation
Horses rule motivation. Mike was trying to relax and become a little more healthier than trucking had allowed. He thought about passing any physical fitness test like he could still do while on active duty. His physical fitness had allowed him to stay on active duty for another three years after the coma had let him go. Back then in the eighties it was easier to relax and recover. Most of the troops in his company would escape the base to hit town and party. Shouldn’t coma survivors think of themselves as mentally strong as everyone else?
Horses Rule Medical Care
Horses rule medical care. Along with having to look for another job in trucking he had to depend on Veteran’s Affairs for medical treatment. He had been on active duty during the first gulf war. During that conflict the head injury had made him start regularly taking an anti-seizure prescription. Since a grand mall seizure was so hazardous Mike wouldn’t take any chance at getting drunk and draining his liver of that anti seizure medication. With his alcoholism under control Mike still thought it necessary to be regularly given refills of dilantin. Shouldn’t veterans that have suffered a head injury be treated as seriously as all the others?
